Field Hockey Loses on the Road to No. 18 Delaware

NEWARK -- The University of Pennsylvania field hockey team closes its non-conference schedule with a 2-0 loss to No. 18 Delaware.

NOTES
*No. 18 Delaware is the seventh opponent the Quakers have faced ranked within the Penn Monto/NFHCA Coaches Poll.
*In the second half, the Quakers' defense did not allow a shot until there was five minutes remaining in regulation.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Delaware took the lead on the first shot of the game, with Lotte de Koning pouncing on a bouncing ball in the circle. 

The Quakers immediately began fighting back. Penn earned a corner in the eighth minute. Sofia Palacios sent the ball in to Paige Meily, and Meily's shot forced the Delaware keeper to make a save.

In the 24th minute, Penn earned its third corner of the game. Meily received the ball at the top of the circle again, but this time her shot was blocked. 

Penn came into the second half improved on both sides of the field. In the 50th minute, Alexa Schneck forced a save on her shot from the corner.

Julia Russo got a shot off from another corner minutes later, but her shot went wide. 

The Blue Hens got their first shot of the second half off a corner in the 66th minute, with Femke Strien hitting the crossbar.

Delaware extended its lead just a minute later, with de Koning scoring her second goal of the game from just inside the circle. 

The Quakers refused to give up. Penn earned a corner in the 69th minute. Schneck recieved the ball inside the circle, but her shot was saved. Erin Kelly got the ball seconds later, but her shot was just wide at the near post. 

Penn travels to Yale as they continue Ivy League play next Saturday at noon.
