Men's Hoops Readies For Cornell, Columbia This Weekend

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team got off to a good start in Ivy League play, defeating defending champion Princeton last Saturday. The Quakers will hope to continue that momentum this weekend with two more Ancient Eight games at The Palestra. Penn hosts Cornell on Friday night and Columbia on Saturday night.

Both games will be the back end of doubleheaders, as the Penn women also host the Big Red and Lions this weekend. Friday's doubleheader tips off at 5:30 p.m., while Saturday's twinbill tips at 4:30 p.m.

All four games this weekend can be seen on the Ivy League Network (ILN), now available on Apple TV, Roku and the ILN app for Android and Apple devices.

THE C-C HOME WEEKEND
Penn has hosted the Ivy League's New York schools on the same weekend 58 times in Ivy history. The Quakers have swept the weekend 43 times, including last year and three of the last four years; split the weekend 13 times, most recently in 2015-16; and been swept twice, most recently in 2008-09.

GAME 16 – PENN (10-5, 1-0) vs. CORNELL (6-7, 0-0)
Friday, Jan. 12, 2018 * 8 p.m.
The Palestra (Philadelphia)

THE CORNELL SERIES
• Penn and Cornell are meeting for the 229th time with the Quakers leading the series, 154-74.

• The Quakers have dominated this series of late, winning each of the last nine matchups and 11 of the last 12.

• Penn's sweep last year came courtesy of an 82-63 victory here at The Palestra on February 12, followed 12 days later by a 69-66 win in Ithaca.

• By calendar date, Friday's game represents the earliest meeting between these Ivy rivals since they met exactly 11 years ago on January 12, 2007.

GAME 17 – PENN vs. COLUMBIA (3-10, 0-0)
Saturday, Jan. 13, 2018 * 7 p.m.
The Palestra (Philadelphia)

THE COLUMBIA SERIES
• The Quakers and Lions are meeting for the 232nd time this weekend, with Penn holding a 140-91 lead in the series.

• That said, the Lions have had the upper hand in recent years with a 6-3 mark in the last nine matchups.

• The teams have split the season series four of the last five years; the lone exception during that time was 2015-16, when Columbia swept.

• Last year, Penn won the first meeting at The Palestra, 70-62; two weeks later, Columbia avenged that loss with a 70-67 win in New York City.

PENN BY THE NUMBERS
3 • The number of times sophomore Ryan Betley has been named Ivy League Player of the Week this season, after he earned the honor Monday following his 21-point performance against Princeton. On Tuesday, Betley added to his list of awards by being named Big 5 Player of the Week.

7 • The number of times the Quakers have hit 10 or more three-point baskets in a game this season, including five of the last eight contests.

9 • Penn is in a stretch of nine-straight home games (five in Ivy League play). The Quakers will go the entire month of January without a road game before traveling to Princeton on February 6.
