IRVINE, Calif. - Kitty Qu's game-high eight saves preserved a 0-0, double-overtime draw for the University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team at UC Irvine in the team's first leg of the West Coast trip Friday night. Despite losing the advantage in shots on the night, 19-4, the Quakers had a flurry of opportunities in the final 30 minutes in a hard-fought match.
HOW IT HAPPENED
*After UC Irvine set the tone early on the offensive end,
Miranda Schwartz fired the first shot for the Quakers in the 25th minute from 35 yards out, but the hit found the keeper's mitts.
*Following halftime, the Quakers came out with a bevy of momentum as
Emily Sands had an opportunity in front that was flicked just wide of the net.
*In the closing minutes of regulation,
Erica Higa re-entered the match and took a Penn corner in the 86th minute. Her service into the box found
Megan Lloyd, but her shot was blocked at the two squads entered the first overtime deadlocked at zero.
*Irvine goalkeeper Maddie Newsom made a game-saving, sprawling save on Higa's shot from six yards out in the 92nd minute as the match moved into the second overtime.
*In the 105th minute, the Anteaters (1-1-2) were set up with a corner and Qu made back-to-back stops on header attempts to lock down her first shutout of the season.
