RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Erica Higa netted the first goal of the University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team's 2017 campaign, but the Highlanders of UC Riverside responded in the second half as the two squads played to a 1-1 draw Sunday night. The Quakers wrap up their West Coast swing with two draws on the weekend as they prepare for a three-game homestand at Rhodes Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
*The Quakers kept the pressure on UC Riverside early and often, as
Emily Sands and
Darby Mason both registered shots on goal in the first nine minutes.
*Following a shot by
Sasha Stephens in the 34th minute,
Erica Higa found the back of the net from 12 yards out to give the Quakers a 1-0 lead heading into the half.
Megan Lloyd was credited with the assist.
*In the 70th minute, UCR's Amanda Roy knotted the game at one on a 40-yard free kick into the back of the net.
*The Highlanders had their chances in the closing minutes of regulation, but Penn goalkeeper
Kitty Qu came up big once again to keep the match tied at one.
*The two teams traded possessions in the two overtime periods, but it was to no avail as Penn and UC Riverside concluded the match in a 1-1 draw.
WHAT'S NEXT
Penn (0-2-2) returns home to Rhodes Field Saturday to take on non-conference opponent Bucknell. Kick off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
