PHILADELPHIA - The University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team had its chances to find the back of the net early and often throughout Sunday night's match against La Salle, but Danielle Marx's 80th minute goal lifted the Explorers to a 1-0 victory over the Quakers.
How It Happened
*The Quakers were aggressive offensively from the onset of the match, and were poised to take the lead early when Darby Mason fired a shot from 20 yards out headed for the upper right 90 of the net. La Salle goalkeeper Larisa Zambelli made a great play on the ball, leaping to her left to deflect it wide of the net for her first save.
*Following La Salle's first corner kick of the match which was cleared out by the Penn defense, Allie Trzaska ripped a shot on goal, but Zambelli grabbed it out of the air as the Quakers continued to keep pressure on the Explorers' half of the field.
*In the 26th minute, Kitty Qu made her first save of the game on a point-blank shot from La Salle to keep the match in a scoreless tie.
*Emma Loving had an opportunity from seven yards out in the closing minutes before halftime, but her shot flew just above the crossbar as Penn and La Salle entered the break knotted at zero.
*In the 80th minute, La Salle broke through when Danielle Marx cleared a defender inside the box and found the back of the net for the match's first goal.
*The Quakers had one last chance in the 87th minute when Paige Howard broke free from the La Salle back line, but Zambelli came charging from out of the net to dive on the ball as the Explorers (3-0-1) escaped with a 1-0 win.
