HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME 1
Lafayette was first on the board in Sunday's game one after John Selsor's two-out, RBI double brought in the game's first run. The Quakers responded quickly in the second inning with three runs on three hits, due in large part to four two-out base runners in the inning. Matt Tola picked up his first RBI of the season with a run-scoring single to center before Sean Phelan drove in the go-ahead runs with a bases-loaded, two-out liner to left center to give Penn a 3-1 lead.
After tacking on a run in the third, the Quaker offense exploded for four runs on four hits in the fifth to put the game out of reach. Andrew Murnane found a hole in the left side for an RBI single - his fifth consecutive multi-hit game - and Tim Graul followed with a shot off the fence in left for a two-run double, part of a three RBI effort from the senior. Right fielder Daniel Halevy added the fourth run of the inning with a run-scoring single to center to extend the lead to six.
The Penn offense would continue their onslaught in the sixth, as Murnane's RBI double down the right field line and Graul's run-scoring single to center pushed the lead to ten. Halevy returned to the plate and delivered a shot into the left-center gap for a double to score two more, and Matt O'Neill's base knock to right center brought in Halevy to create an eleven run advantage.
Starting pitcher Mike Reitcheck continued his strong start to 2017 in game one, earning his second win of the season after tossing six strong inning of two-run ball while striking out five. The lefty now has a team-leading 1.15 ERA through four starts this year.
GAME 2
Senior left-hander Adam Bleday picked up right where he left off last weekend against Marist in Sunday's game two, turning in yet another quality start to pick up his first win of the season. Bleday struck out eleven over his six innings of work, falling one strikeout shy of his career-high he set seven days ago in the no decision. The senior allowed just one run on six hits, including a perfect sixth and final inning in which he struck out the side in order before handing the ball over to the bullpen the rest of the way.
The Quakers took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second after Chris Adams singled and came around to score on a sacrifice fly from fellow freshman Thomas Pellis. Adams started the rally yet again in the fourth by reaching on an error and advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt from Tola. After Penn got two more runners on to load the bases with two outs, Murnane reached on a fielder's choice to bring in Adams and extend the lead to two.
Lafayette (2-22) would cut the deficit to one on an RBI single in the fifth, but single tallies in the sixth and seventh on RBI hits from Adams and Phelan would be more than enough run support for relievers Billy Lescher and Jake Nelson, as the two combined for three hitless innings out of the bullpen to lock down the 4-1 win and Nelson's second save of the season.
Phelan went a combined 6-for-10 at the plate with three RBIs between the two games, while Graul, Murnane and Halevy each drove in three runs. Adams had a three-hit performance in the game two win, as he and Peter Matt provided a double each in the middle of the lineup.
