#10 Women's Lacrosse Reels in Rutgers, 11-9

Box Score
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Caroline Cummings and Alex Condon powered No. 10 Penn's offense, each finishing with five points as the Quakers knocked off Rutgers, 11-9, at High Point Solutions Stadium
Cummings had a game-high four goals while Condon had two goals and three assists as the Red and Blue improved to 3-0 this season. The two connected on an insurance goal for the Quakers with 1:53 to provide Penn with a two-goal lead and all but lock up the victory.
The Quakers thought they were comfortably in front midway through the second half after Cummings scored her fourth of the game to give the Red and Blue a 10-5 lead, but the Scarlet Knights charged back within one after scoring the next four goals – including three in a span of 2:21. Macy Scott's third goal of the game with 6:42 had Rutgers within one and thinking upset, but Penn denied the Scarlet Knights any further goals.
The second half run was the second time the Scarlet Knights put a true scare into the Quakers. Late in the first half, Rutgers scored three times in a span of 6:21 to turn a 4-2 Penn lead into a 5-5 tie with 1:10 left in the opening half.
Penn would show its resiliency, though, with two goals in a span of 40 seconds before the end of the half. Cummings had the first one off a Gabby Rosenzweig pass with 0:42 to play, and a team effort led to the second just before the buzzer. The Scarlet Knights turned the ball over with under 10 seconds left in the first half and Alex Condon picked up the ground ball near midfield. She would launch a pass 40 yards to a wide open Chrissy Corcoran who took three quick steps and fired home her first career goal with 0:02 remaining on the clock to send Penn into the break with a 7-5 lead.
Neither team would score over the first 8:44 of the second half before Barry connected for two goals in a span of 2:46 to give Penn a 9-5 lead. Cummings would then make it 10-5 with an unassisted strike, providing just enough distance so that the Scarlet Knights could not fully charge back.
Notes: Cummings went for five points for the second time in three games, tying her career high … Condon followed up her eight-goal game last weekend at Johns Hopkins with five … Erin Barry scored her first collegiate goal and registered her first collegiate multi-point game … Chrissy Corcoran also netted her first collegiate goal … Barry led the Quakers with four draw controls … Condon finished with two caused turnovers and three ground balls … Cummings added three ground balls of her own … Britt Brown made seven saves in goal, including six in the first half.
How it Happened
• The Quakers scored twice to open the game, Emily Rogers-Healion connecting for her first goal of the season just 1:40 into the game and Alex Condon following off a Rogers-Healion assist 4:59 into the game.
• The Scarlet Knights would counter with two of their own in a span of 2:12 to tie the game. Amanda Turturro scored first, followed by Kristina Dunphey at the 9:16 mark.
• Penn would break the tie with a pair of goals from Caroline Cummings at the midway point of the first half. First, Cummings scored off a Condon pass at the goalmouth with 17:14 left in the opening period. Just over the midway point, Cummings finished a nice 60-yard run from Gabby Rosenzweig with a top-corner goal with 14:44 to play in the opening half.
• Rutgers again tied the game with two quick goals, connecting twice in a span of 0:46 to knot the game up at 4-4.
Natalie Stefan netted an unassisted goal with 5:43 remaining in the first half to give Penn a 5-4 lead.
• After the Scarlet Knights tied the game, 5-5, Penn scored twice in the final 0:42 of the first half to take a 7-5 lead at the break. Caroline Cummings completed her hat trick with 0:42 remaining, before Chrissy Corcoran scored her first career goal with 0:02 to play. She finished a 40-yard pass from Condon to find the back of the net for the first time in her career.
Erin Barry scored the first two goals of the second half, netting her first collegiate goal 8:44 into the second half off an assist from Alex Condon. 1:46 later, she would cut to goal and score while diving through the air to give Penn a 9-5 lead. Cummings would follow with her fourth of the game with 14:21 to play to give Penn a 10-5 lead.
• Kopyta scored for Rutgers with 14:00 to play, ending a scoreless run of 16:53 by the Penn defense. 1:06 later, Dunphey struck unassisted to make it a 10-7 Penn lead. Joanna Reilly scored to finish a run of three goal in 2:30 of play to cut Penn's lead to two at 10-8 with 11:29 to play.
• The Scarlet Knights closed to within one off a Macy Scott goal with 6:58 to play. Her third of the game was assisted by Paige Paratore and rendered Penn's lead just 10-9.
• With 4:10 to play, Rutgers hit the post on a free position attempt. The ground ball scattered 30 yards from goal and Alex Condon scooped it up to send Penn on a successful clear.
• Condon would then ice the game with her second goal of the night with 1:53 to play. She stormed down the middle after Cummings smartly pulled back on a free position and fed her for the better angle. That goal gave Penn an 11-9 lead.
The Red and Blue make their Franklin Field debut on March 4, hosting No. 15 Cornell at 1 p.m. The two teams split a pair of meetings in 2016 – Penn winning in the regular season but the Big Red scoring an 11-10 win in Philadelphia to claim the Ivy League Tournament championship.
