PHILADELPHIA - The University of Pennsylvania men's and women's fencing programs will send seven total fencers to the November North American Cup held in Kansas City, Missouri this weekend. Unlike the Elite Invitational last week that was a team event, the North American Cup is an individual tournament. Because the November NAC is a junior event, only fencers 19 and under are eligible to participate. Therefore head coach
Andy Ma is sending seven freshmen that include
Emma Harris,
Nicole Wong, and
Miranda Gieg for the women and on the men's side
Sean Wilson,
Nikola Damjanovic,
Michael Li and Andy Sun.
In what has become an annual occurrence, the men will send four fencers to the NAC this weekend. Last year the Quakers sent
Adam Green and
Julian Merchant. As a team, the Red and Blue went 4-1 last weekend at the Elite Invitational taking on North Carolina, Cleveland State, Ohio State, Air Force, and NJIT where Wilson, Damnjanovic, Li, and Sun all made their collegiate debuts. All four will look to build off of a strong weekend. In particular,
Michael Li boasted a 9-2 record in foil with his only two losses came against Air Force and Ohio State. Meanwhile Wilson will looking to build on an 8-5 record and Damjanovic a 6-5 record in epee. Sun went 7-5 in sabre.
The women also went 4-1 last weekend losing to Ohio State and will send three freshmen to the Junior NAC in Kansas City. Leading the charge for the women will be
Miranda Gieg and
Nicole Wong. Gieg went 9-3 in sabre last weekend in which the team faced off against North Carolina, NJIT, Ohio State, Northwestern, and Air Force. Two of Gieg's three losses came to Ohio State. Wong had an impressive record as well as she went 9-4 in foil. Harris, who went 3-5 in epee at the Elite Invitational, will also join them.
