Men's Basketball Opens Ivy Play Saturday at Princeton

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team has won three in a row, giving the Quakers momentum heading into their Ivy League opener on Saturday. The first test might be arguably the toughest, as Penn travels to play archrival Princeton, the consensus preseason favorite.

Saturday's game will be televised on the Ivy League Digital Network; in the Philadelphia viewing area, fans can only view the game live on Comcast SportsNet.

GAME 12 – PENN (6-5, 0-0) at PRINCETON (7-6, 0-0)
Saturday, Jan. 7, 2017 * 7 p.m.
Jadwin Gym (Princeton, N.J.)

The Series with Princeton
• These teams are meeting for the 235th time with Penn leading the series, 124-110; the Quakers have not played any other opponent more than the Tigers.

• Princeton has held the upper hand the last several years, winning five in a row, eight of the last nine, and 13 of the last 15 matchups.

• The Tigers narrowly swept last year's season series, gaining a 73-71 overtime win at The Palestra and then a 72-71 decision in the season finale at Jadwin Gym.

• By calendar date, this is the earliest meeting between these archrivals since the 1995-96 season (the teams played on Jan. 6, 1996 that season).

The Penn-Princeton Rivalry
Excluding the last few years, these two programs have been the flagships for the Ivy League for literally decades. Consider these notes...

• Penn and/or Princeton won every Ivy League title from 1989-2007 (Penn 9 outright, Princeton 8 outright, 2 shared).

• From 1959-2007, Penn and/or Princeton won at least a share of the Ivy League title all but three years (Cornell won the title in 1988, Brown did it in 1986, and Yale did it in 1962).

• In 2008, ESPN.com rated the most prestigious college basketball programs of all time; Penn came in 34th, while Princeton was 40th.

• In 2005, The Sporting News rated the greatest college basketball programs of all time; Penn came in 16th, while Princeton was 19th.

Penn by the Numbers
0 • Games lost by Penn when leading at the half under head coach Steve Donahue; the Quakers are 5-0 in such games this year, 11-0 in the two seasons.

2 • Starts made by freshman Ryan Betley, who made his debut December 28 against Drexel after missing Penn's first nine games due to injury.

5 • Players who have led Penn in scoring in a game so far this season: AJ Brodeur, Matt Howard, Jackson Donahue, Caleb Wood, and Sam Jones.

9 • Consecutive double-figure scoring games for the freshman Brodeur, who has 10 overall this season. On Monday, he was named co-Ivy League Player of the Week, co-Big 5 Player of the Week, and Ivy League Rookie of the Week.

11 • Penn players on the current roster who have had at least one double-figure scoring game during their career, including seven this season already.

Quaker Notemeal From Fairfield
• The win gave Penn its first three-game win streak since opening the 2015-16 season with three-straight victories.

• Penn won for the first time this season when trailing at the half.

• Penn grabbed 45 rebounds as a team, a season high.

• After starting the game 0-11 on three-point shots, Penn went 7-13 beyond the arc the rest of the way.

• Freshman AJ Brodeur scored Penn's first 11 points in the second half and 20 of his game-high 27 after the break. He also snared 10 rebounds for his second collegiate double-double, and added three blocked shots. On Monday, Brodeur was named co-Ivy League Player of the Week, co-Big 5 Player of the Week, and Ivy Rookie of the Week.

• Senior Matt Howard had seven of Penn's first nine points, hit double digits before the game was 14 minutes old, and finished with 19 points to go with nine boards.

• Sophomore Jackson Donahue knocked down three three-pointers and finished with nine points. He also had four rebounds and two assists.
