Meet The Penn Field Hockey Class of 2021 - Hana Charnley

PHILADELPHIA – University of Pennsylvania field hockey head coach Colleen Fink and her staff are excited to welcome the addition of seven student-athletes for the 2017-18 academic year that will bolster a returning group of 14 letterwinners for the Red and Blue.

The incoming cohort features two USA Field Hockey Junior Olympic selections, four all-state honorees, seven all-conference performers and includes a mix of two forwards, three midfielders and two backs. Additionally, all seven members of the incoming class are multi-sport athletes and have earned numerous academic honors during their high school careers.

In the coming weeks, the Quakers will feature one new member of the Class of 2021 each day. First up, Hana Charnley, a midfielder from Short Hills, N.J.

Fink on Charnley: “Hana Charnley is a feisty and skilled midfielder. She has great vision and overall defensive skills. Hana has a high fitness level and can be quite powerful despite her stature. She is mature beyond her years and will be a great teammate.”

High School: Earned four varsity letters and served as a team captain under head coach Leslie DeSimone at Kent Place School… Was a three-time Union County and Non-Public North finalist… Chosen as a 2016 First Team Essex/Union Red Division All-Star, Union County First Team All-Star, and Star Ledger All-Non-Public First Team honoree… Also was a 2016 NJFHCA First Team Non-Public All-Star and Star Ledger All-State Second Team selection… Chosen to participate in the 2016 NJFHCA Senior All-Star game… 2015 NFHCA Academic All-American… Captained her club team to a 2015 USFHA Disney Showcase gold medal… Three-time participant in the National Club Showcase and won a bronze medal in 2015… Won a gold medal at the 2014 Junior Premiere League championship and was a silver medalist at the event in 2015… Five-time National Futures Championship selection… Selected to the 2015 AAU Junior Olympics… Also earned four varsity letters in indoor and outdoor track where she was a state champion… Green Key member… Served as the Athletic Association President and is a member of the President’s Council… Writer for the school newspaper… Member of the French and Science National Honor Society… Also played the violin and was a part of the school and chamber orchestra.

Personal: Daughter of Noriko and Harry Charnley… Has one sister, Erika… Plans to enroll in the Wharton School.

Most Embarrassing Moment: During a track meet in middle school, I tripped at the start of a race. When I fell, I brought down everyone behind me creating a giant pileup on the track.

Proudest Athletic Moment: In my freshman year, I scored a goal to tie-up the country championship game against our rival school.

Why Penn? Penn gives me the opportunity to grow and excel academically and on the field hockey field as well. I not only fell in love with the campus and the atmosphere of Penn, but also with the team!
