Gymnastics Opens Home Campaign Against Yale

PHILADELPHIA - Following an impressive start to the season last weekend, the University of Pennsylvania gymnastics team is set for its home opener at The Palestra, playing host to Ivy League foe Yale Saturday, Jan. 21st at 12 p.m. The teams will compete in conjunction with the Penn wrestling team battling Lock Haven. 

The Quakers boasted their best team score since February of 2015 last time out at the Lindsey Ferris Invitational, totaling a 193.275. Beam was the most successful event of the day for the Red and Blue, as Penn took home a 48.700, led by Nicole Swirbalus recording a 9.850 and earning ECAC Specialist of the Week honors for her efforts.

On vault, Caroline Moore notched a career-high 9.775 to close out the meet for Penn, while Kyra Levi led the Quakers in both the floor exercise and the uneven bars. Levi recorded a 9.850 on the bars and a 9.750 on the floor. 

Several rookie Quakers made their collegiate debuts in the nation's capital, including Kellie Flavin, Emma Cullen, Tara Mills and Caroline Mitsch. Cullen led the group, competing in three total events, highlighted by a score of 9.725 on the bars. Flavin notched a mark of 9.600 in the same event. 

Yale enters Sunday's meet with a record of 0-4, having faced one similar opponent to the Quakers in George Washington. In the Bulldogs' opening competition of the season, they fell to the Colonials by a score of 195.550-191.425, their highest score to-date this season. Most recently they finished fourth of four teams at UC Davis. 

Saturday's meet will be broadcast live on the Ivy League Digital Network.
