Baseball Splits Twin Bill with Princeton

PRINCETON, N.J. -Playing its fourth game in two days against Princeton, the University of Pennsylvania baseball team split a doubleheader with the Tigers on Sunday. The Quakers salvaged the final game of the series thanks to a late home run by Ryan Mincher and a great day on the mound from Jake Cousins. Penn is now three games back of the Tigers in the Gehrig Division with eight games remaining.

Game One: Penn 1 - Princeton 5

TEAMS TRADE RUNS:Tied at zero in the fourth, Princeton took a 1-0 lead on a passed ball allowing Zack Belski to walk home.

Penn tied the game in the top if the the fifth on an RBI double from Gary Tesch. Tesch drove a ball in the right-center field gap, allowing Sean Phelan to hustle home from first.

ALL PRINCETON LATE:The Tigers made a charge in the fifth and sixth of the seven-inning game, scoring four times to take their third game of the series. In the fifth, Joseph Flynn doubled to right to knock in a pair. Flynn would score later in the inning on a sacrifice fly from Paul Tupper.

Billy Arendt drove in the games final run in the sixth on another sacrifice fly, scoring Jesper Holmsted who tripled a batter earlier.

Game Two: Penn 5 - Princeton 2

TRAILING EARLY... AGAIN:In the second inning of game two, Penn found itself down by a run again when Joseph Flynn drove in Nick Hernandez with a double to left field.

FIRST LEAD OF THE WEEKEND:Still trailing 1-0 in the third, Gary Tesch led off the inning by getting hit in the foot with a pitch before Tim Graul hammered a ball over the left field fence. Graul's home run gave the Quakers a 2-1 lead, their first of the weekend.

ERROR EVENS BALLGAME:In the bottom of the third with two outs and runners at first and third, Penn attempted too throw behind the runner at third on a high pitch, but saw the ball head into left field allowing the runner to score and tie the game at two.

MUCH NEEDED MINCHER:Following a frustrating seventh that ended with a runner being thrown out at the plate, the Quakers struck for two runs in the eighth courtesy of a two-run home run from Ryan Mincher. Daniel Halevy began the inning with a base hit and scored when Mincher hit an inside pitch into the trees in left to give Penn a 4-2 lead.

INSURANCE: In the ninth, Tim Graul struck again when he singled to center field and allowed Matt McGeagh to score from second for the game's final run.

QUAKER NOTES: Tim Graul went 3-for-5 in game two, knocking in three runs... Jake Cousins returned to the starting rotation, pitching seven innings and allowing two runs in a win in game two... Jake Nelson went 1-2-3 in the ninth for his fifth save of the season.

UP NEXT:Penn faces Big Five rival La Salle on Tuesday at Meiklejohn stadium on Tuesday.
