New Year Invitational Results
PRINCETON, N.J. – The University of Pennsylvania track & field teams competed in the final meet of the 2016 calendar year at the New Year Invitational hosted by Princeton University. The Quakers tested their early-season forms against Monmouth, Rider, Rutgers, Princeton and The College of New Jersey during the second week of the indoor track and field season on Sunday afternoon in Princeton's Jadwin Gym.
Three Quakers posted marks that placed or improved upon their current standings in the Penn record books, including juniors Sean Ryan (weight throw), Barbara Biney (60m) and freshman Breanne Bygrave (60m hurdles). In addition to that trio of performances, the Red and Blue registered a combined 20 podium spots for first, second and third places including nine from the men and 11 from the women.
Ryan entered the school record books in the weight throw with a toss of 18.17 meters, good for No. 8 all-time at Penn and third place in the event. With his performance today, Ryan became the third athlete during the 2016 calendar year to earn a spot on the indoor top-10 list in the discipline, joining Sam Mattis and Noah Kennedy-White.
On the women's side, junior Barbara Biney posted a time of 7.59 seconds in the 60 meter dash to put her at No. 4 on the top-10 list and up from her previous slot at No. 8. Biney was first in the preliminaries and cruised to a second place finish in the finals, just behind teammate Taylor McCorkle's first place finish of 7.51 seconds. McCorkle's time was just one one-hundredth of a second off her school record pace of 7.50 seconds.
Freshman Breanne Bygrave continued her streak of record-setting performances at just her second collegiate meet. The first-year sprinter crossed the finish line in 8.75 seconds in the prelims of the 60 meter hurdles and cruised to a third place finish in the finals, but that qualification performance earns her No. 2 all-time and up one spot from her time of 8.79 and No. 3 spot set last week.
Additionally, Jeff Wiseman (600m), Mike Monroe (high jump), Taylor McCorkle (60m), Donnisa Edmonds (200m) and Candace Taylor (500m) all placed first in their respective events to lead the Red and Blue on the afternoon.
Following today's meet, Penn will go on a brief hiatus until the start of the spring semester. The Quakers return to action on Saturday, Jan. 14 for the Angry Birds Invite in Bethlehem, Pa.
