Pitching Fuels Penn to Series Sweep of Princeton

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

PHILADELPHIA – After winning twice on Saturday versus Princeton, the University of Pennsylvania baseball team completed the series sweep of the Tigers, coming away with a 5-1 and 2-0 victory Sunday afternoon at Meiklejohn Stadium.

After a sunny and warm day Saturday, Sunday was cooler with the wind blowing in from left field for the series finale doubleheader. Penn (20-12, 14-2 Ivy) saw its offense be productive, but the Quakers relied on sophomore right-handed pitcher Jake Cousins and senior right-handed pitcher Connor Cuff on the mound, to complete the weekend sweep.

Cousins (4-1) picked up a complete game victory in the opener Sunday, throwing seven innings allowing just four hits and one run. He struck out three Princeton (6-29, 3-13 Ivy)batters.

In game two, Cuff (4-1) also pitched seven innings picking up the victory. The right-hander battled himself all afternoon, allowing five walks and striking out four. Despite the free base runners and four Princeton hits, Cuff allowed no runs in the game.

Pitching in the final two innings of game two, and picking up his second save of the season was sophomore right-hander Mitchell Hammonds.

Offensively in game one, the Quakers scored five runs on nine hits, with most of the damage coming in a four-run second inning. Three consecutive singles by Ryan Mincher, Matt McKinnon, and Tim Graul plated one run, before junior outfielder Gary Tesch doubled down the left field line driving in two more runs. Senior catcher Austin Bossart would follow with a double down the left field line, scoring Tesch.

Penn would score once more in the game on an RBI double by senior Mitch Montaldo in the fifth inning.

Game two had a much different feel, as both teams had managed only five hits through five innings. In the bottom of the seventh inning junior outfielder Matt Greskoff changed the complexion of the game hitting a solo home run to right field, giving Penn a 1-0 lead.

An inning later junior Jonah Campbell hit a ball over the fence in right center field giving the Quakers the 2-0 lead, and help seal the win.

On Sunday, senior first baseman Matt McKinnon extended his hitting streak to 10 games in game one, with an RBI single in the second inning. McKinnon was unable to push the streak to 11 games, going 0-for-3 in the weekend finale. During the 10 game span, McKinnon went 18-for-37 (.486) with three doubles, a triple, home run, and 14 RBI.

Recently added to the schedule, Penn will play one more midweek non-conference game before its Ivy League showdown with Columbia next weekend. The Quakers will host Philadelphia University at 3:45 p.m. on Wednesday at Meiklejohn Stadium.
