PHILADELPHIA - In a midweek non-conference game, the University of Pennsylvania baseball team defeated Saint Peter's, 8-4, on Wednesday afternoon at Meiklejohn Stadium.

Penn freshman Tim Graul had perfect day at the plate, going 4-for-4 with a home run and a double, while collecting three RBIs.

The Quakers (16-11) found themselves down 1-0 after the first pitch of the game as Saint Peter's (7-21) Jon Kristoffersen took freshman left-handed starter Jack Hartman deep to right center field for a home run. Hartman would wind up earning a no decision, throwing three innings, allowing two runs, while striking out five, leaving with a 3-2 lead.

Penn scored one run in the second inning after Mike Vilardo doubled and advanced to third, before a Ryan Mincher sacrifice fly RBI. In the third, Graul singled and scored on an Austin Bossart double, who was then driven in by Jeff McGarry, for the Quakers third run. In the fourth, Penn took a 4-2 lead on Graul's first home run of his collegiate career.

Mitchell Hammonds came on to throw for the Quakers and threw 2 2/3 innings allowing two runs on three hits, walking two and striking out two. Relieving Hammonds in the sixth was sophomore Mitch Holtz who threw 1 1/3 innings, picking up the win.

Penn took the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth in déjà vu fasion, as Graul singled and Bossart doubled driving in the freshman. Bossart would score after a Rick Brebner RBI single. In the seventh inning, the Quakers would add two more insurance runs when Graul drove in Gary Tesch, who doubled, and Brandon Engelhardt.

After Holtz, reliever Pat Bet continued a rather impressive run on the mound. The senior made his eighth appearance of the season, and has yet to allow a run. On Wednesday, Bet pitched two innings, striking out four Saint Peter's batters.

Up next, Penn puts its 8-0 Ivy League record on the line, as it hosts Gehrig division rival Cornell in a weekend long series with a doubleheader on Saturday and Sunday at Meiklejohn Stadium. Games begin at 12 p.m. both days.
