Baseball Splits, One Game Playoff with Columbia

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

NEW YORK – With both teams needing two wins to clinch the Ivy League Gehrig Division championship, The University of Pennsylvania baseball team split its doubleheader with Columbia on Saturday, winning game one 3-2, before falling 5-2.

Penn (24-16, 15-5 Ivy) and Columbia (24-17, 15-5 Ivy) both came into the weekend needing three wins in a four-game series to claim the Gehrig Division outright. The two teams will now square off in a one-game playoff to determine the Gehrig Division representative in the Ivy League Championship Series. The one-game playoff will be decided next weekend, with date, time, and location to be determined. Hosting duties will be awarded to the team with the best winning percentage, against the next common opponent with the highest League winning percentage --regardless of division.

As of Saturday, Yale (9-9), Cornell (8-10), and Dartmouth (7-9) all can play a factor in the determination of whether Penn or Columbia will host the playoff game. Due to rain this weekend, Yale and Cornell still have two games to play, while Dartmouth has four.

If Yale or Dartmouth have the highest League winning percentage of those three teams, Penn will host the playoff, if it is Cornell, Columbia will host.

In New York on Saturday, Penn starting pitcher Ronnie Glenn (5-2) threw a complete game seven innings, earning his fourth straight win, in game one. The left-hander struck out three batters, and took a shutout into the final inning, before sealing the victory.

Offensively, the Quakers totaled seven hits with Mitch Montaldo, Matt Greskoff, and Austin Bossart delivering the key RBI hits for the Red and Blue.

Montaldo doubled in Ryan Mincher in the third inning, after Mincher singled, to give Penn a 1-0 lead. The Quakers would add a crucial insurance run in the sixth, and the seventh, on Greskoff's RBI double scoring Jeff McGarry, and Bossart's RBI single bringing home Brandon Engelhardt.

Columbia would test Penn and Glenn in the seventh, assembling four hits and two runs, leaving the tying run on third base when Glenn induced a groundball out to McGarry at first base.

Penn would only record four hits in game two, Brandon Engelhardt and Matt Greskoff each collected two.

The Quakers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, after a leadoff double by Brandon Engelhardt, who would come around to score on a Matt Greskoff RBI single.

Penn wouldn't score again until the seventh, when Greskoff doubled and came around to score, after a Rick Brebner groundout advancing him to third, where Mike Vilardo drove him in on a groundout to the shortstop.

Starter Dan Gautieri (2-6) went four innings for the Quakers, allowing three hits, and three runs, walking one, and striking out three. Cody Thomson allowed two runs in 2 1/3 innings of work in relief, while Stephen Silvestri pitched a scoreless 1 2/3 innings, with a strikeout.
