Baseball Defeats Cornell Twice, Now 11-1 in Ivy

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

PHILADELPHIA – Four games, three wins, 11-1 in the Ivy League.

That's where the University of Pennsylvania baseball team stands after a four-game series against Lou Gehrig division rival Cornell this Saturday and Sunday at Meiklejohn Stadium.

On Saturday, Penn dropped game one, 9-0, before rallying back to win game two, 11-2. With the momentum on their side, the Quakers (19-12, 11-1 Ivy) went back to work on Sunday, and quickly jumped ahead of the Big Red (15-14, 6-6 Ivy)beginning from pitch number one.

Penn senior Brandon Engelhardt jumped on the first offering from Cornell's Brent Jones in game one, lacing a fastball to left centerfield for a leadoff triple. Junior Austin Bossart followed with an RBI single to give the Quakers a 1-0 lead.

The Red and Blue would extend their lead in the second and the third inning, scoring once in each frame. Sophomore Matt Greskoff drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, scoring Matt McKinnon and senior Rick Brebner drove in Engelhardt on a groundball to first base.

Penn starting pitcher Connor Cuff (4-1) continued to throw the ball well, as he has done for much of the season, going seven innings, allowing two runs on six hits, while striking out four. The junior right-handed pitcher made pitches when he had to against the Big Red, only running into trouble in the third inning after back-to-back doubles and the fourth when he allowed a solo home run to Cornell's Ryan Karl.

Penn took a 4-2 lead against Cornell on a Tim Graul RBI ground ball in the sixth inning, taking advantage of a pair of Big Red miscues.

The Quakers offense took control of game two right from the start, scoring three runs in the first, third, and fourth innings.

Rick Brebner, and sophomore Ryan Mincher each had three hits in the game, followed by junior Jeff McGarry and Matt Greskoff with two hits. Mincher drove in four runs.

Junior left-hander Ronnie Glenn (3-2) picked up his third victory of the season on the mound for Penn, after scattering six hits through six innings. Glenn struck out six Cornell batters, while allowing no runs.

After Glenn, Penn junior left-hander Stephen Silvestri threw two innings of scoreless relief, striking out two. Senior right-hander Pat Bet allowed his first runs of the season in the ninth, giving up two runs to the Big Red before closing out the game.

Penn returns to action on Tuesday at home, in a midweek non-conference game against the University of the Sciences. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Meiklejohn Stadium.
