EASTON, Pa. – Wrapping up a home-and-home weekend series, Penn split a doubleheader with Lafayette on Sunday, falling in extra innings in game one, 4-3, and winning game two 11-7.

The Quakers swept the Leopards on Saturday at home, winning 3-0 and 8-3.

Penn (5-10) and Lafayette (6-10) will meet once more this season, this Tuesday, scheduled to play at 3 p.m. at Penn's Meiklejohn Stadium in the Liberty Bell Classic.

Game One
Tied, 2-2, after seven innings of play, Penn and Lafayette would head to extra innings in game one of two.

In the top of the eighth inning, Quakers designated hitter Matt McKinnon lined a single to left center field, driving in Rick Brebner to give the Red and Blue a 3-2 lead.

In the bottom of the inning, Lafayette leadoff hitter Andrew Santomauro singled to the left side, bringing up Alex Nickles who would sacrifice bunt, reaching base when Penn first baseman Jeff McGarry was unable to handle the throw from pitcher Mike Reitcheck (0-1). With the tying and winning runs aboard the Leopards would sacrifice once more to move their runners to second and third. After an RBI ground out to shortstop Ryan Mincher, Lafayette's Campbell Lipe would single to right center field for a 4-3 victory.

In getting to extra innings, Penn starter Dan Gautieri pitched seven innings allowing two runs on four hits, while striking out 12 Lafayette batters.

Penn scored its first two runs of the game on RBI singles by Mitch Montaldo in the first inning, and Mike Vilardo in the fourth.

Game Two
Game two starting pitcher Jack Hartman (2-0) worked seven innings, allowing two runs – one earned – scattering six Lafayette hits, while striking out one. The outing marked Hartman's second win in his second consecutive quality start.

Offensively, the Quakers totaled 17 hits led by sophomore Mike Vilardo who went 4-for-4 and scored four runs. Three Penn batters had two RBIs in the game, Austin Bossart, Mitch Montaldo, and Gary Tesch.

Penn jumped out to an early lead, posting six runs in the top of the first inning. The Quakers would go on to score one run in the fifth, one in the seventh and eighth, and two in the ninth adding insurance runs that they would need before the bottom of the last frame.

After a scoreless eighth inning by reliever Cody Thomson, junior Jeff McGarry came on to pitch for the Quakers in the ninth and surrendered five runs, only one of which was earned, before recording the final out and sealing the 11-7 victory.
