Cornell 10 - Penn 8 (10 Innings)

Cornell 8 - Penn 1

Cornell 16 - Penn 5

PHILADELPHIA ? Cornell took advantage of three Penn errors in the top of the tenth inning of game two of the four-game series with Penn to secure a 10-8 win, completing the game which had been suspended due to darkness on Saturday.

From there, Cornell continued to apply pressure ? scoring 24 runs in the regularly-scheduled doubleheader to sweep all three of the day's games. The Big Red won game one, 8-1, and game two, 16-5.

When the suspended game started back up, Penn had Todd Roth ? Sunday's scheduled starter ? on the mound. After retiring the first batter, he walked Jadd Schmeltzer. Rye Kagan's grounder to shortstop resulted in an error by Dan Williams as his throw to second to start a potential double play sailed wide. Brian Kaufman's grounder to first was misplayed by Kyle Armeny and loaded the bases. Scott Hardinger singled to left to score two. Steve Gable committed the third error of the inning on the next play, allowing Kaufman to score what would turn out to be the winning run. Jimmy Heinz completed the scoring with a sacrifice fly.

The Quakers did mount a comeback in the bottom of the tenth, scoring two runs and having the potential winning run at the plate. Williams singled and Adrian Thomas walked to start the inning. Jeff Cellucci had his flyball to centerfield dropped by Hardinger, allowing Williams to score. Michael Gatti followed with a sac fly of his own to score Thomas. With two outs, Tom Grandieri walked to bring up William Gordon. The third baseman struck out swinging to end the game.

Penn had a 6-1 lead in the game after three innings, but allowed the Big Red to crawl back into the game. Hardinger had tied the game in the eighth with a RBI double to right center.

The Big Red carried their hot bats over to the rest of the series as they scored in the top of the first inning in the next two games to take leads they would not relinquish.

Two doubles and a fielder's choice gave Cornell a 2-0 lead after one inning of the next game. In the finale, it was a five-run first inning that propelled the Big Red to the win ? aided by an eight-run second inning for a 13-0 lead after two. All eight runs scored in that inning came after the Quakers had retired the first two hitters of the inning.

Dan Williams was 5-for-8 on the day with a home run and two RBIs. The homer was his second of the weekend. In the four-game series, he was 8-for-14 with the two dingers and 4 RBIs and 4 runs scored.

The Quakers are back on the field Wednesday when they take on La Salle at 3 p.m. at Meiklejohn Stadium.
