PHILADELPHIA - It's been nearly two weeks since the University of Pennsylvania women's tennis team last took action on the court, but that's set to change this weekend as the Quakers head south to battle Virginia and Old Dominion. Penn will face UVA on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. before squaring off against the host Monarchs Sunday at 10:00 a.m. Both matches will be played in Norfolk, Va. at ODU's Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.
The Red and Blue (1-2) are coming off their first win of the spring season, defeating Big 5 foe Temple on Feb. 4 by a score of 6-1. Five Quakers got their first wins of the season in singles after a tough start to the year at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend, while Penn also grabbed the doubles point against the Owls.
Senior Kana Daniel leads the way for Penn, checking into the latest ITA singles rankings at No. 108 in the nation. Last time out, Daniel picked up a hard-fought, three-set win over Temple's Alina Abdurakhimova, while also teaming up with junior Ria Vaidya to win 7-5 on court one in doubles. Daniel entered the year slotted as the No. 3 singles player in the Northeast Region, followed by rookies Ashley Zhu and Sarah Dreyfuss, ranked No. 10 and No. 18 respectively.
The Cavaliers enter Saturday's match with a record of 2-3 on the year, boasting wins over Boston College and Syracuse, with losses to Ole Miss, Wake Forest and South Carolina. UVA is led by three singles players ranked in the top-20 of the Atlantic Region, including No. 4 Rosie Johanson, No. 7 Cassie Mercer and No. 8 Meghan Kelley. Chloe Gullickson and Mercer are the top doubles squad for Virginia, who finished last season with a record of 19-11, advancing to the NCAA Elite Eight. Penn is 5-7 all-time against UVA but has won the last five contests between the two squads, with the last meeting coming on Feb. 12, 2006, a 4-3 win for the Red and Blue.
The Monarchs own a 4-1 mark overall this year, having defeated Xavier, Appalachian State, Richmond and similar to the Quakers, Temple. Like Virginia, Old Dominion has three singles players ranked in the top-20 of the Atlantic Region, as well as two players represented in the national rankings with Holly Hutchinson checking in at No. 57 and Borislava Botusharova at No. 89. Penn owns a 10-5 record all-time against ODU, including a 4-1 victory last season in Philadelphia.
