EASTON, Pa. -- The Penn Quakers took down the Quinnipiac Bobcats in four sets, 25-15, 25-22, 22-25, 25-14. With the win, Penn has now won three straight since dropping its season opener.
"Proud of the way we responded in the fourth set after dropping the third," said head coach
Tyler Hagstrom. "We were able to put more pressure on them from the service line and with our block which put us in a better position to score points."
Jenna Garner posted 15 kills and 18 digs while
Emery Moore went for 30Â assists and 13 digs.
Haley Kerstetter tallied nine kills and a career-best eight blocks.
Addison Pollock led the defense with 34 digs, a career-best.
Penn (3-1, 0-0 Ivy League) hit .290 for the match compared to .105 for Quinnipiac. Penn had 59 kills, 13.0 blocks, 90 digs and two aces while Quinnipiac had 47 kills, 6.0 blocks, 78 digs and three aces.
"We lost momentum in the third set but Addi also turned it on and had some really nice digs. I'm really glad about the way we finished the match," Hagstrom said.
Vittoria Tonelli led Quinnipiac (1-5, 0-0 Metro Atlantic) with 11 kills and 11 digs while Sophia Mineland went for 10 kills and 14 digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1 | Penn started out hot, scoring five of the first six to take an early lead. After a couple points from the Bobcats, Penn scored five straight, getting kills from Garner and Kerstetter to go up 10-3. Quinnipiac scored seven of the next nine to cut the lead to two at 12-10 before Penn scored three of four to go up 15-11 into the media timeout. The Quakers kept their run going, tallying the next five points, four on attacking errors, to go up 20-11. Two kills from Garner spurred the rest of the set for the Quakers as they took a 25-15 frame one win.
SET 2 | The Quakers came out hot again in set two, talling five of the first six once again. Quinnipiac cut the lead to one at 5-4 and the teams went back and forth through most of the middle of the set before the Bobcats tied it up at 10-10 following an ace and a Penn error. Penn scored the next three on two errors and a service ace from Pollock. Quinnipiac fought back, getting it back to one at 16-15. The Quakers brought it back to a four-point lead at 22-18, getting kills from Garner, Siskin and Murray. The Bobcats responded with three straight points to cut the lead to one again, forcing a timeout from coach Hagstrom. Penn scored three of the final four points to take set two, 25-22. Siskin ended the set with a kill.
SET 3 | The two teams split the first six points before the Bobcats tallied four staight to go up 8-4. Penn cut the lead to as few as two at 11-9 after an ace from Moore before Quinnipiac scored four of the next five to go up 15-10 into the media timeout. The two teams went back and forth for the next few points, with Penn cutting it to 18-15 on a Sanger kill before two more from the Bobcats made it 20-15, forcing a timeout from coach Hagstrom. Two kills from Siskin and one from Kerstetter made it 20-18, forcing a Quinnipiac timeout. The Bobcats went up 22-18 before Penn scored three of the next four to make it 23-21, forcing another timeout. Quinnipiac would eventually close out the frame, 25-22, to make it a 2-1 match.
SET 4 | Penn took an early 5-2 lead, benefitting off several errors from its opposition. The Bobcats cut the lead to one at 7-6 before the Quakers scored six straight to go up 13-6.
Skylar Greene had three kills in the spurt while Murray and Garner had one each. Another kill from Greene helped Penn take a 15-8 lead into the media timeout. A pair of kills from Siskin helped the Quakers expand the lead to 20-11. Quinnipiac did not get closer than eight the rest of the way as the Quakers went on to take set four, 25-14. Greene had six of her seven kills in the fourth frame.
