Big Test For Men's Basketball Saturday: at Ivy League Leader Yale

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team has won four in a row in Ivy League play, in the process putting itself in great position to make the four-team Ivy League Tournament. The Quakers face arguably their most daunting assignment of the conference season on Saturday, traveling to New Haven to take on Ancient Eight leader Yale in a Saturday matinee.

The Red and Blue enter Saturday's game alone in third place, at 6-4, a game up on fourth-place Cornell (5-5) and two up on Columbia, Dartmouth and Princeton (all 4-6). The Tigers are at Brown on Friday night, while on Saturday the Big Green and Lions match up in New York City and the Big Red hosts Harvard.

The Series with Yale
*The Quakers and Bulldogs are meeting for the 244th time, with Penn holding a 153-90 lead in the series.

*That said, Yale has won the last five and eight of the last nine matchups. That includes a 77-60 win at The Palestra back on January 24, a game that was nationally televised on ESPNU. Sophomore AJ Levine led Penn with 17 points, seven assists and four steals while TJ Power and Ethan Roberts scored 12 points apiece and teamed up for 13 rebounds (Power 7, Roberts 6).

*Yale's sweep last season included a 90-61 rout at The Palestra and then a 72-71 win 13 days later here in New Haven.

*Penn's last win in the series came on February 17, 2023 (66-64), and the Quakers are looking for their first win in the JJL since a 71-55 victory a little more than nine years ago (February 19, 2017).

Good to Know…
*Penn enters Saturday's game on a four-game Ivy League win streak, the Quakers' longest since winning seven in a row late in the 2022-23 season.

*With one more win, Penn will match its Ivy win total from the last two years combined (7).

*Following Saturday's game, Penn is back at home for a traditional Ivy weekend, hosting the Big Green on Friday and second-place Harvard on Saturday. The Quakers end their Ivy slate at Brown, a Friday night affair in Providence.

*Penn cannot clinch a spot in Ivy Madness Saturday...but Yale can. A Bulldog win and they are on the road to Ithaca.

Penn MBB by the Numbers
+3.0 – Penn's turnover margin in Ivy League play so far this season, best among the Ancient Eight team; Yale is second at +1.80. The Quakers were +17 in turnovers last weekend against Columbia and Cornell—Penn committing 19, the Lions and Big Red combining for 36—and scored 45 points off turnovers while allowing just 15.

8 – Penn players who have led the team in scoring in at least one game this season; freshman Jay Jones became the eighth last Saturday when he scored 17, almost double his previous season/career high (9 vs. Villanova).

8 – Consecutive double-figure scoring games by junior TJ Power; he is averaging 16.5 ppg in that span.

27 - Steals by sophomore AJ Levine in Ivy League play, by far tops among Ivy players. (Brown's Jeremiah Jenkins and Harvard's Ben Eisendrath are tied for second with 20.) Levine had 11 steals last weekend, six against Columbia and five vs. Cornell.

54 - Offensive rebounds grabbed this season by junior Augustus Gerhart, most among Ivy players. Yale's Nick Townsend and Samson Aletan are two of the three players right behind him, with 53; the other is Columbia's Mason Ritter.

96 – Assists dished out this season by Levine; with four more, he'll be just the second Penn player in the last five years to reach 100 for a season (Nick Spinoso had 107 in 2023-24).
