Men's Basketball Hosts Palestra Double Dip: Columbia Friday, Cornell Saturday

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team is back at home for two more games this weekend. The Quakers host Columbia on Friday night, then follow up with Cornell on Saturday evening.

The Red and Blue enter the weekend in a four-way tie for third place in the standings—the Big Red also in that group—with the Lions just a game behind at 3-5. Penn can go a long way toward securing an Ivy Madness berth and stay in the Ivy championship hunt with a sweep.

The C/C Home Weekend
*Penn is hosting the Ancient Eight's Empire State programs on the same weekend for the 65th time since the start of Ivy League play.

*The Quakers have swept this home weekend 46 times (most recently in 2022-23), split it 16 times (including last season), and been swept just twice, in 1968 and 2009.

The Series with Columbia
*The Quakers and Lions are meeting for the 247th time overall, with Penn holding a 151-95 lead in the series.

*Penn had won three in a row, six of seven, eight of 10, and 11 of the last 14 matchups before Columbia took a 72-67 decision two weeks ago at Levien Gym in the Big Apple.

*In that loss two weeks ago, junior TJ Power led all scorers with 23 points—19 of them coming in the second half—while Michael Zanoni added 15.

*Penn swept last season's series, taking a 93-78 decision here at The Palestra and then a 92-87 decision at Levien. They were the Quakers' two highest-scoring games last season.

The Series with Cornell
*The Quakers and Big Red are meeting for the 244th time overall, with Penn holding a 163-80 lead in the series. The Quakers have beaten Cornell more than any of their other Ivy rivals.

*That said, Cornell had won the last four meetings and five of the last six before the Quakers took a 91-81 decision two weeks ago in Ithaca.

*Penn put all five starters and freshman Dalton Scantlebury in double figures in the scoring column in that victory, the first time the Quakers had six players hit double digits in a game since March 7, 2015—coincidentally, also against Cornell.

*The Big Red swept last season's games, taking an 86-76 decision here and then romping the Quakers at Newman, 90-62. Penn's last win here at The Palestra was a 92-86 decision on February 4, 2023.

Ivy Honors for Power
Junior TJ Power was named Ivy League Player of the Week on Monday, after he led Penn with 18 points in last Saturday's 61-60 win over Princeton. The junior added seven rebounds, three assists and a steal in becoming the fourth Penn player to earn an Ivy weekly honor this season.

Penn MBB by the Numbers
8 - Rebounds grabbed by freshman Jay Jones last Saturday vs. the Tigers; that was the team high, making him the eighth different player to lead the Quakers in rebounding in a game this season.

16 - Steals by sophomore AJ Levine in Ivy League play so far, tops among Ivy players.

17.4 - Ethan Roberts' overall points-per-game average this season, second behind Cornell's Cooper Noard (19.4); the Quakers senior was held scoreless last Saturday by Princeton.

44.9 - The combined three-point field goal percentage for Power (19-42) and Roberts (16-36) in Ivy play.

53 - Offensive rebounds grabbed this season by junior Augustus Gerhart; he has 20 O boards in Ivy play, second behind Yale's Nick Townsend (22).
