Field Hockey Comes Up Short Against No. 8 Harvard, 4-0

PHILADELPHIA – Penn field hockey battled No. 8 Harvard on Friday afternoon at Ellen Vagelos Field, but the Crimson used their four-goal first half to secure a 4-0 victory over the Quakers.

Harvard struck twice in the opening quarter and added two more goals in the second to take a 4-0 lead into halftime. Penn generated more offensive pressure after the break, recording four shots and three penalty corners in the third quarter, but the Quakers were unable to find the back of the cage.

*Ruby de Frees made nine saves in goal for the Quakers, including three in the fourth quarter.

*Maxi Aranowitz, Jazmin Borensztein, Reese Czajkowski, Riley Thomson and Sydney Mandato each recorded a shot on goal for Penn.

*The Red and Blue generated five penalty corners on the afternoon, including three in the third quarter.

*The Quakers held Harvard scoreless over the final 30 minutes.

How It Happened
Harvard opened the scoring in the first quarter when Sage Piekarski found the back of the cage. Tilly Butterworth added another goal later in the frame as the Crimson took a 2-0 lead after the opening 15 minutes. Harvard registered seven shots in the quarter, with de Frees making four saves to keep Penn within two.

The Crimson added to its advantage early in the second quarter when Lucy Barker scored off an assist from Martha le Huray. Piekarski then scored her second goal of the afternoon to make it a 4-0 game. The Red and Blue created opportunities of its own in the frame, earning two penalty corners and putting shots from Thomson and Mandato toward goal.

Harvard took a 4-0 lead into halftime, with de Frees making six saves through the opening 30 minutes.

The Quakers came out with increased offensive pressure in the third quarter. Penn earned three penalty corners and recorded four shots, with Aranowitz and Borensztein both forcing saves from the Harvard goalkeeper. Nahon also registered a shot, while Czajkowski's attempt was saved as the Quakers continued to search for an opening.

The Red and Blue's defense held Harvard scoreless in the third quarter, and the Quakers continued to compete through the final frame. de Frees made three more saves in the fourth, while Harvard was held without a goal for the remainder of the contest.

Harvard finished with an 18-6 advantage in shots and a 7-5 edge in penalty corners. de Frees finished with nine saves, while Penn put five of its six shots on target.
