How It Happened
Penn looked to establish itself early in the first half, creating opportunities in the attacking third and earning a free kick in Drexel territory during the 11th minute. Sullivan put a shot on target but Drexel goalkeeper Raphael Bartell made the save to keep the contest scoreless. Kunimura followed with an attempt that went wide left as the Quakers continued to look for an opening.
Drexel began to find opportunities of its own as the half progressed. Salvino sent a shot wide in the 19th minute before the Dragons generated pressure around the Penn box in the 24th minute. Falcon III made a save on Salvino's attempt at 24:03, helping Penn withstand the sequence as Drexel earned consecutive corner kicks. The Dragons continued to threaten, but the Quakers' defense held firm.
Penn responded with a series of set-piece opportunities, earning corner kicks in the 28th, 31st and 43rd minutes. Romeo Dahlen and Sullivan each recorded attempts during the middle portion of the half, while Michael Howard forced another save from Bartell at 43:10. Despite the chances on both ends, neither side found the breakthrough, and the teams entered halftime tied 0-0.
The match remained scoreless into the second half, with both teams looking to turn their attacking opportunities into the deciding goal. Drexel nearly broke through in the 57th minute when Salvino got behind the Penn defense and fired a left-footed shot from inside the box. Falcon III reacted with a diving save to deny the chance and keep the Dragons off the board.
The crucial stop set the stage for Penn's game-winner moments later. At 57:39, Shine supplied the assist to Niehenke, who finished the opportunity for his first career goal and gave the Quakers a 1-0 lead. The goal was Niehenke's first of the season and Shine's first career point.
Drexel immediately searched for an equalizer, testing Falcon III again just seconds after the goal. The Penn goalkeeper stopped a shot from Christian Combs before the Dragons earned three corner kicks in a short stretch between the 58th and 60th minutes. Penn weathered the pressure and continued to protect its advantage as the second half wore on.
The Dragons kept pushing, earning another corner kick in the 65th minute and creating additional chances through the 70th minute. Falcon III made another save on a Drexel attempt from Mo Diallo in the 65th minute, while a later shot from Gustavo Santana went wide. Penn continued to defend its lead as Drexel looked to capitalize on its opportunities from the attacking third.
One of the Dragons' best late chances came in the 79th minute. Wright sent a cross toward goal that curved dangerously toward the net, but Falcon III made a diving save and tipped the ball over the crossbar. Drexel earned another corner kick following the stop, but the Quakers once again kept the ball out of the net.
Penn nearly added an insurance goal in the 80th minute when Bottene received a lead pass and carried the ball toward the six-yard box. His shot was blocked, keeping the margin at one. The Quakers continued to defend under pressure in the closing minutes, while Empson-Speiden forced a save from Drexel goalkeeper Peter Punchello who took over the goalkeeping duties for the Dragons in the second half.
Drexel sent a long range ball toward the Penn goal in the closing seconds, but Falcon III handled the attempt to seal the shutout. The Quakers finished with 13 shots and four shots on goal, matching Drexel's total shot count while holding on for the 1-0 victory.
