Tupper Earns First Win as Field Hockey Beats ODU, 4-2

PRINCETON, N.J. – The University of Pennsylvania field hockey team secured its first victory of the 2025 season on Sunday at Princeton's Bedford Field, defeating Old Dominion, 4-2.

It was also the first career win for new head coach Scott Tupper as the Quakers now possess a 1-1 record on the season, while the Monarchs drop to 1-3.

Quaker Notemeal
* Sunday marked Penn's first-ever win over Old Dominion in just the second game in the all-time series. ODU had won the previous matchup, 4-0, on Nov. 18, 1988.

* Philine Klas, Beau Lilly Barrington-Hibbert and Emma Nahon all scored their first goals of the season.

* Sydney Mandato assisted on three of Penn's four goals, a career-high number for the junior.

* Julia Ryan tallied her second goal of the year, scoring in back-to-back games.

* Goalie Ruby de Frees recorded five saves, recording 15 on the weekend after recording 10 in Friday's matchup against No. 2 North Carolina.

* The Quakers picked up the victory despite being outshot, 9-8, by Old Dominion. Shots on goal were knotted up at 7-7.

How it Happened
Penn's offense came out swinging behind goals from Klas and Nahon in the opening quarter.

The Red and Blue immediately set the tone for what was an impressive display of aggressive offense and stifling defense over the course of the first 15 minutes. Both teams adjusted defensively in a scoreless second period, leaving Penn with a 2-0 advantage heading into the locker room at halftime.

Ryan continued the Quaker scoring run to begin the third period as the team began to pull away, now up 3-0.

However, Old Dominion responded quickly with Sian Emslie scoring at the end of the third quarter, followed up by another goal from Serena Langendoen to begin the fourth as Penn's lead was diminished to just one.

A clutch goal from Barrington-Hibbert with under three minutes to play helped Penn secure the 4-2 victory.

Up Next
The Red and Blue will take on No. 4 Maryland (Sept. 12 at 4 p.m.) and American (Sept. 14 at 3 p.m.) next weekend in College Park.
