COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The University of Pennsylvania field hockey team defeated American on Sunday, 2-0, behind goals from the stellar senior duo of
Julia Ryan and
Livia Loozen.
The Quakers recorded their second win of the season and now hold a .500 record of 2-2, while the Eagles dropped to 1-4.
Quaker Notemeal
*Penn recorded its first shutout of the season and first since a 3-0 victory at Dartmouth on Oct. 11, 2024.
*Ryan and Loozen were the game's only scorers, with Loozen finding the goal column for the first time in 2025. Ryan notched her third of the year and has a goal in three of the season's first four games.
*Penn led American in shots (15-9) and shots on goal (7-4).
*
Philine Klas had a team-high four shots, while both Loozen and Ryan added three. Ryan's two shots on goal also led her teammates.

Ruby de Frees recorded four saves, including three in the third quarter to set the tone in the second half, in recording her first shutout of the season.
*Penalty corners were even, 6-6.
*Head Coach
Scott Tupper—who came to Penn following a stint as associate head coach at Maryland—closed his homecoming weekend to College Park with a victory, the second of his collegiate coaching career.
How it Happened
Neither team's offense found success early on with a combined four shots taken and no goals scored in the first 15 minutes.
Penn's Loozen finally ended the scoring drought with her first goal of the season off an assist from
Honor Roberts as the Quakers took a 1-0 lead.
The Quakers led the Eagles 6-4 in shots in the first half, with three of them being on goal.
Both teams entered halftime in desperation of some positive offensive tempo.
de Frees would not let the Eagles offense respond, recording three saves in the third quarter.
The Quakers added to their lead with Ryan finding the back of the net off an assist from Loozen, giving them a 2-0 edge heading into the final quarter.
The fourth quarter ended in a stalemate with Penn picking up the two-goal victory on the road.
