PHILADELPHIA— The University of Pennsylvania softball team dropped their final game against Harvard earlier this afternoon, 11-1.
The result leaves the Quakers without a win in conference play (0-12) and 2-26-1 on the year. With only nine Ivy League games left to play, the Red and Blue's chances of playing in the postseason are dwindling.
Final: Harvard 11, Penn 1 (after 6 innings)
Harvard built momentum early in the game, leaving the bases loaded in the first inning before opening the second inning in a rain delay. Shortly after resuming the game, Elena Weinseimer put the ball in play, which was fielded by the shortstop and thrown off-line to the catcher. Pinch-runner Julia Mizo slid across the plate to beat the throw, tallying the first run of the day for the Crimson. Later in the inning, Finley Payne hit a three-run home run over the left field fence to bring the score to 4-0 in Harvard's favor.
In the third inning, Maya Douglas sent a solo shot over the fence in left-center field, recording the Crimson's fifth run of the game and her sixth home run of the year. Penn responded, Megan Huang knocking the ball past the ill-positioned left fielder to score Abbie Stellrecht. At the end of the third inning, Harvard held the lead, 5-1.
Reigning conference player of the year Sophie Sun hit her sixth home run of the season in the fourth inning, extending the Crimson's lead, 6-1. After a scoreless fifth inning, Harvard broke out offensively in the sixth, scoring five runs. Run number seven came courtesy of Quinn Salazar-Stewart's sacrifice fly to center field to score Sun. Douglas singled to clear the bases, scoring Savannah Fitzpatrick and Megan Davies for the eighth and ninth runs. Alexa Muller closed out the scoring with a two-run home run to bring Douglas home and record Harvard's fourth home run of the game. The Crimson shut down the Quakers in the bottom of the inning, securing the series sweep with a final score of 11-1.
