PHILADELPHIA— The University of Pennsylvania softball team fell short in both of their games of their doubleheader earlier tonight against Princeton. The Tigers took game one, 3-1, before holding on to secure the series with a 6-5 win in game two.
With the result, Penn fell to 3-34-1 overall on the year and 1-19 in Ivy League play.
Final: Princeton 3, Penn 1
Princeton relied on power at the plate in game one, with all three of their runs coming from solo homers. The Tigers jumped out to an early lead, Karis Ford sending the ball over the fence in center field in the top of the first inning. The Quakers battled back defensively, maintaining a scoreless second inning before Princeton struck again in the third. Lauren Pappert hit a rocket over the fence in right-center field to tally the second run for the Tigers. In the bottom half of the inning, the bats started to come alive for the Red and Blue. Ella Utschig singled, allowing Megan Huang to score and put the first run on the board for Penn.
Brielle Wright remained steadfast in the circle, pitching four scoreless innings to close out the remainder of the game. Freshman Morgan Sullivan held down the fort until the sixth inning, when Allie Goodwin went yard for Princeton's third run. Ainsley Pemberton pitched a scoreless seventh inning, but unfortunately the Tigers held on to take game one.
Final: Princeton 6, Penn 5
Princeton kept the power coming in game two with Braeden Hale's two-run shot in the first inning to take the early lead. Penn threw the next punch in the bottom half of the inning, Gigi Ganje knocking in the first run for the Quakers with a double to left-center field. Jade Montgomery followed with a bases-clearing triple, bringing home two more runs and giving the Red and Blue the lead.
The pitchers on both sides held their ground for the next three innings, both tossing a scoreless second, third, and fourth. The Tigers cut the deficit in the fifth inning with a home run by Abby Hornberger to tie the game at three a piece. Hale retook the lead for Princeton with her second home run of the day, bringing the score to 4-3 in favor of the Tigers. Allie Goodwin would resume the scoring in the sixth inning, hitting a single through the right side to score Courtney Harrison. Goodwin crossed the plate later in the inning with a single from Lauren Pappert. When Penn stepped into the batter's box in the bottom of the sixth, Princeton led, 6-3.
Megan Huang came up big in her at-bat, putting the ball in play and running it out. Capitalizing on an error by the pitcher, Dani Freer came across the plate for run number four. With runners on second and third, Madison Bauerle notched a single to score the fifth run for the Quakers. At the end of the sixth, Princeton clung to the lead, 6-5.
