PHILADELPHIA— The University of Pennsylvania women's tennis team closed out their regular season on a high-note, defeating No. 70 Yale, 4-2, earlier this afternoon at the Hamlin Tennis Center.
With the win, Penn finished their season 12-9 overall and 5-2 in conference play.
The Quakers jumped out to an early lead, securing the first team point in doubles with wins from Lara Stojanovski/Gavriella Smith and Sabine Rutlauka/Eileen Wang. In singles, Gavriella Smith doubled Penn's lead, winning her match in two straight sets. On the other side of the catwalk, Maya Urata tallied point number three for the Quakers with a two-set win of her own. Yale's Orly Ogilvy earned the first point for the Bulldogs on Court 1, taking her match in two sets to bring the score to 3-1. Shyla Aggarwal closed the gap again not long after, winning her match to bring Yale within one of the Red and Blue. All eyes fell on courts two and four, watching Lara Stojanovski battle Julia Werdiger and Eileen Wang against Mirabele Brettkelly to determine the match.
Stojanovski fell short in the set one tiebreaker against Werdiger, but battled back from behind to keep the score close in set two. Wang took set one against Brettkelly, and took a 4-0 lead in set two before Werdiger battled back. The catwalk over the two courts filled as heads turned side to side, watching the adjacent matches. Wang dug deep, pulling out the win in set two to clinch the match for Penn and finish her collegiate career with a win.
