PHILADELPHIA— The University of Pennsylvania softball team was bested by Saint Joseph's in a non-conference standalone game under the lights at Penn Park earlier this evening.
With the result, Penn falls to 2-30-1 on the season and extended their losing streak to seven games.
Final: Saint Joseph's 9, Penn 0
The Quakers got off to a shaky start tonight, finding themselves with no outs and the bases loaded with the first three Hawks batters. Sierra Fretz, batting in the clean-up spot, put the ball in play, allowing Sarah Cancila and Hailey Malito to score. Freshman pitcher
Morgan Sullivan was able to stop the bleeding, but not before Saint Joseph's jumped out to a 2-0 lead. In the second inning, the Hawks picked up where they left off in the first. Malito knocked in the third run with a single, with Riley York sending a sacrifice fly to right field to bring home run number four. By the end of the second, the Hawks led, 4-0.
Fretz took the dish again for Saint Joseph's again in the fourth inning, knocking in two runs with a single. In the next at-bat, Meghan Sinkus traded places with Fretz to tally the seventh run for the Hawks. Following the fourth inning,
Ainsley Pemberton tossed two scoreless innings for the Quakers, keeping the game alive going into the seventh inning. Saint Joseph's put the game to bed in their half of the seventh, adding on two more runs before leaving the Red and Blue scoreless with the bases loaded to finish the game.
