Women's Tennis Tops Princeton in Conference Opener, 4-3

PHILADELPHIA— The University of Pennsylvania women's tennis team downed the reigning conference champion Princeton Tigers earlier this afternoon by a final score of 4-3.

With the victory, Penn opens conference play at 1-0 and moves to 8-7 overall.

Sabine Rutlauka and Eileen Wang set the tone early in doubles for the Quakers, getting ahead early in their match and maintaining their lead to win and put the Red and Blue up in doubles, 1-0. Maya Urata and Lara Stojanovski got off to a more difficult start, but fought from behind with some aggressive play. Successfully executing on their game plan, Urata and Stojanovski won their match, securing the crucial doubles point for Penn.

Princeton's Eva Elbaz evened the score with a win in singles, but Gavriella Smith took the lead back with a strong win of her own. The Tigers battled back with a win from Anna Nguyen to even the score at two all. Esha Velaga took the fourth singles point with extra-point wins in two straight sets to put Penn ahead again, 3-2. With Bella Chhiv's win on court two, all eyes fell on the deciding matchup on court six. Maya Urata fell behind early in her match, dropping the first set to Tsehay Driscoll. Staying composed through pressure, Urata dug deep to win the second set, forcing a third. Both teams could be heard throughout the complex as Urata and Tsehay fought tooth-and-nail for the deciding point. Urata came up big, winning set number three to win the match for the Quakers.
