PHILADELPHIA— The University of Pennsylvania softball team fell short in both games of their doubleheader against Brown earlier this afternoon at Penn Park.
With the losses, the Quakers drop to 2-22 on the year and 0-8 in conference play. Facing off against the Bears again tomorrow afternoon, the Red and Blue hope to close out the series on a high note.
Final: Brown 5, Penn 2
The offense for Brown started in the second inning when Amanda Deng sent a two-run blast over the fence for her second home run of the season. With Deng and Cameron Ray Zytkewicz crossing the plate, the Bears took a 2-0 lead. The two teams battled through four scoreless innings before Brown broke through again in the sixth inning, as Deng capitalized on her teammate's mistake. With Maggie Foxx caught in a rundown between first and second base, Deng stole home just before the Quakers tagged Foxx. With the added run, the Bears led the Red and Blue 3-0 halfway through the sixth.
With Kaicee Klus on first, Laurel Moody smashed the ball over the fence for a two-run home run of her own, bringing the score to 5-0 in the seventh. Penn stepped into the batter's box ready to fight with Gigi Ganje hitting a two-out double to keep the game alive. Sophomore Ella Utschig, the moment not getting away from her, sent the ball over the fence for her first career home run, bringing home Ganje and breaking up Alexis Guevara's shutout. Following Utschig's two-run shot, the Bears closed out the game, earning a 5-2 win to start the series.
Final: Brown 12, Penn 7
The Bears got their offense going with small-ball in the second inning, notching two runs to open the scoring for the second game. In Penn's half of the inning, Ella Utschig sent a sacrifice fly deep into center field to score pinch runner Maia Hartley with ease from third, cutting the Brown's lead in half. The Bears picked up where they left off in the third, capitalizing on an error by Penn to add on another run.
The fourth inning belonged to the power hitters, as Brown's Jasmine Hsiao hit a solo shot for her first home run of the season, tallying run number four for the Bears. Laurel Moody subsequently hit her second home run of the day and her eighth of the year to bring the fifth run across the plate. When Penn came to the plate, Jade Montgomery tallied her fifth home run of the year with a two-run blast. The inning continued with a ground-rule double from Roisin Keenan to bring in another run for the Quakers. At the end of the fourth, the Red and Blue trailed Brown, 5-4.
In the fifth, Alyssa Villarde hit a stand-up triple to clear the bases and extend Brown's lead, 7-4. Hsiao later hit her second home run of the game, adding two more for the Bears as she and Villarde crossed the plate. In the sixth, Amanda Deng doubled to bring Abby Bettencourt home, scoring Brown's tenth run. Villarde hit a ground-rule double to clear the bases, scoring Deng and Cameron Ray Zytkewicz.
Penn showed some fight in the sixth, Blake Landow working a walk with the bases loaded to score Gigi Ganje. In the next at-bat, Alexis Youngren singled, allowing Kennan and Utschig to score on the play. The Bears shut down the Quakers in the seventh, sweeping the doubleheader with a 12-7 win in game number two.
