Softball Concludes Series Against Brown

PHILADELPHIA— The University of Pennsylvania softball team concluded their series against Brown earlier today, falling to the Bears, 12-1.

With the five-inning loss, Penn falls to 2-23 on the year and 0-9 in Ivy League play.

Final: Brown 12, Penn 1 (after 5 innings)
Brown came out strong in the first inning, swinging often but remaining disciplined. The first run was forced in when Abby Bettencourt was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Amanda Deng recorded the first RBI of the day with a single to score Kaicee Klus from third. Penn cut the lead in half in the bottom of the inning when Jade Montgomery hit a moonshot over the fence in right-center field, her sixth home run of the season. At the end of the first inning, Brown led, 2-1.

Laurel Moody knocked in the third run for Brown with a single to score Lily Berlinger. The Bears got their offense going again in the fourth inning after a scoreless third, Bettencourt hitting a single down the left-field line to score Jasmine Hsiao and reload the bases. Cameron Ray Zytkewicz then poked the ball through the left side to score Klus, followed by a single by Deng to bring home Bettencourt and Moody. Leah Carey kept the hot streak going with a single to center field to bring home Deng.

Things got complicated with Hsiao's at-bat, her striking out but taking advantage of a lack of a tag from Penn. As the Quakers tried to get organized, Hsiao and the Bears kept running, Hsiao making it to second base, Bettencourt advancing to third, and Moody scoring. The events of the play frazzled the Red and Blue, Klus putting the ball in play and reaching on an error as Berlinger scored. Moody took the dish again, hitting a single and advancing to second on the throw, allowing Hsiao to come home and Klus to make it to third. The final run scored as a result of heads-up baserunning, Klus stealing home on a wild pitch. When the top half of the fourth came to a close, Brown led Penn, 12-1.
