CHERRY HILL, N.J. – The University of Pennsylvania women's rowing team had mixed results in its first racing of the spring, coming up with some nice results in the morning but falling in all five of their races in the afternoon at the Big Ivy Dustup, which took place Saturday on the Cooper River.

"We raced well for our first contest of the spring," said Penn's first-year head coach,
Bill Manning. "The 1V led the way with their come-from-behind victory over Michigan and Syracuse. The 3V, led by captain
Celia Gallagher, prevailed in a tight race with two Syracuse boats. Both were really gutsy efforts against strong crews that highlighted our persistence and commitment to each other. The 2V finished a length back of Michigan and showed potential. I need to coach them better because they want to go fast and have ability.
"In the afternoon we struggled in the choppy water and did not match Rutgers' power," Manning said of the afternoon racing. "They showed us a standard that we aspire to. Overall, a good start that shows we're a top ten caliber team with room to grow."
