Composto Shines at First Day of NCAA Wrestling Champs; Seven Quakers Advance to Second Day

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania wrestling team wrapped up the first day of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Wrestling Championships at the Wells Fargo Center on Thursday night, with seven wrestlers securing spots in the third session of the tournament.
 
CJ Composto led the charge for Penn, advancing to the 141 quarterfinals off a 2-0 outing in the City of Brotherly Love.
 
Quaker Notemeal
*Max Gallagher (125), Ryan Miller (133), Cross Wasilewski (149), Jude Swisher (157), Nick Incontrera (174), and Maximus Hale (184) join #10 Composto in Friday's morning session in the consolation brackets.  
 
*#16 Miller, #14 Swisher, and #9 Wasilewski won their first-round matches to account for the other championship bracket wins on the day.
 
*Freshman Wasilewski competed in the first NCAA Championships of his collegiate career.
 
How It Happened
Junior Composto prevailed in both his matches today, topping #23 Josh Edmund (Missouri) in overtime, 8-5, to advance to the second round before completing a third-period comeback over Oklahoma State's #7 Tagen Jamison, 6-4, to clinch his spot in the 141 quarterfinals battle.
 
Senior Ryan Miller grabbed a gritty decision over Nebraska's #17 Jacob Van Dee (8-4), sophomore Swisher pinned #19 Cobe Siebrecht (SDSU) in 1:56, and first-year Wasilewksi pinned #24 Mason Shrader (CMU) in 6:04 to account for the other Quakers who picked up first session victories.  
 
#17 Gallagher, #18 Hale, and #22 Incontrera topped their opponents to open consolation bracket action, as sophomore Gallagher beat Cornell's #32 Marcello Milani, 5-1, senior Incontrera shut down Drexel's Jasiah Queen, 3-0, and senior Hale edged out Missouri's #31 Colton Hawks, 7-2, to advance to the second day of the tournament.

The Quakers continue their journey at the 2025 NCAA Wrestling Championships on Friday, March 21, inside the Wells Fargo Center. First match is scheduled for noon.
