Softball Falls to Rider at Home; Looks Ahead to Seton Hall

PHILADELPHIA— The University of Pennsylvania softball team played their first games at home of the season in a doubleheader against Rider earlier this afternoon.

Falling in both games to the Broncs, the Quakers drop to 1-12 on the season and 0-2 at home. They hope to have their first home win against Seton Hall tomorrow afternoon.

Final: Rider 8, Penn 0 (after 5 innings)
Rider got out to an early lead after Abby Cruz sent a double down the right field line to clear the bases, scoring Kendall Reda-Fehsal and Kiersten Buchanon. When they came back to the batter's box in the second inning, the Broncs unleashed their offense, starting with a second double from Cruz to move Reda-Fehsal to third and score Buchanan and Fallyn Stoeckel. Olivia Burroughs stepped up to the plate, notching a double to center field and scoring Reda-Fehsal and Cruz. Emma Morgan sent the ball to shortstop and reached on an error that scored Burroughs. By the time the second inning ended, Rider led Penn, 7-0.

The Broncs played some small ball in the top of the fifth, adding an insurance run off a single by Kayley York to score Keegan St. Cyr. With the eighth run tallied, the game one was sealed for Rider with a 1-2-3 bottom half of the inning.

Final: Rider 7, Penn 2
The Broncs got a fast start in the second game, much like the first. Cruz singled in her first at bat, allowing St. Cyr to open the scoring. They continued to execute at the plate in the second inning, as Noelle Flail beat a ball to the plate on an error. St. Cyr singled, and advanced to second on a fielding error that also allowed Cami Johnson to score. At the end of the second, Rider led game two, 3-0.

The only offense for Rider in the third inning came from a solo shot by Burroughs, the wind carrying the ball just over the left-field fence. Penn began to find a rhythm in their half of the third, as Madison Bauerle sent a double to left-center field to score Gigi Ganje and Maia Hartley. With runs on the board, Penn trailed 4-2 at the end of the third.

Rider took advantage of an error in the fifth inning, York running out the play to reach first while Johnson scored. Then in the sixth, St. Cyr singled to score Shea Johnson, to give the Broncs their sixth run of the game. Cruz hit into a fielder's choice, reaching first while scoring St. Cyr, notching Rider's seventh run of the game.
