PHILADELPHIA— The University of Pennsylvania women's tennis team fell in their match this morning against conference-opponent Cornell in the ECAC Championship. Playing in the consolation bracket, the team dropped their second match of the tournament in the last pair of singles matches.
The Quakers entered the day with a critical lineup change due to injury, altering the doubles pairings. Coming out on the wrong side of the doubles split, Cornell took the early lead, 1-0.
Lara Stojanovski quickly made up the deficit, winning her match handily in two sets. Martinez restored the one-point lead, only for Sasha Motlagh to even the score at two points all with her victory. Maya Urata then fell to Hoi Ki Jenny, putting the Big Red up over the Red and Blue, 3-2, with two matches left to finish.
Gavriella Smith dropped set one to Sage Loudon, but fought back in set two to force a third. Meanwhile, on the court alongside Smith, Eileen Wang won her first set against Michelle Ryndin, 7-5, but Ryndin bested Wang in set two. Wang and Smith battled side by side as cheers of encouragement and praise rained down from the catwalk overhead. Wang had Ryndin on the ropes, but the match was abandoned one point short of victory after Smith was defeated by Loudon.
