PHILADELPHIA— The University of Pennsylvania women's tennis team had a disappointing start to the ECAC Championship tournament today, suffering a loss to Yale in their opening match.
Hosting the tournament, the Quakers took an early lead against the Ivy-League rival Bulldogs. After clinching the doubles point, Eileen Wang made quick work of Mirabelle Brettkelly, shutting her out in the sweep. Lara Stojanovski brought the team score to 3-0 with her dominant victory over Shylay Aggerwal.
Unfortunately for the Red and Blue, Gavriella Smith, Sasha Motlagh, and Sabine Rutlauka all fell to their opponents in their singles matches. Leveling the score, the Bulldogs closed the deficit to 3-3 with the match between Maya Urata and Yale's Angela Huang still to finish.
Urata fell to Huang in the first set, but fought back to take the second set and push the match to a third. Running out of steam, Urata was bested by Huang, securing the win for the Bulldogs.
