PHILADELPHIA— The University of Pennsylvania women's tennis team routed Lehigh in today's match, sweeping them 7-0.
With the win, the Quakers move to .500 on the spring season, bouncing back after some injuries have left them shorthanded over the last few weeks.
Penn jumped out to an early lead, claiming the doubles point with two quick wins. Maya Urata and Eileen Wang completed their match first, shutting out their opponents, 6-0. Esha Velaga and Gavriella Smith secured the point minutes later, winning their match 6-2. Liza Tkachenko and Saige Roshkoff led their match, 4-2, but it was abandoned after the point was clinched on Court 1.
The Quakers made quick work of the Mountain Hawks on the singles side, each match only taking two sets to secure the win. Eileen Wang, Gavriella Smith, and Sarah Wang all took control early, each of them securing their match while conceding less than three points to their opponents. Less than an hour into the singles portion of the dual match, the Red and Blue secured the match and led Lehigh, 4-0.
Liza Tkachenko, Esha Velaga, and Maya Urata finished out the match on courts 4, 1, and 5 to complete the sweep for Penn in less than two hours. With another solid win at home under their belts, they will have about a week to recover and prepare for their next match in the Hecht Tennis Center.
