The Cornell/Columbia Road Weekend
*Penn is making this Empire State swing for the 64th time overall; in fact, when this road trip didn't happen last year it was the first time since 1958-59.
*Overall, Penn has swept this road trip 25 times (most recently in 2021-22); split it 28 times (last in 2022-23); and been swept 10 times (last in 2010-11).
*Quakers head coach
Steve Donahue—who, of course, coached ten years at Cornell and was current Big Red coach Jon Jaques' college coach—is 5-3 at both Cornell and Columbia since taking over as Penn's head coach.
The Series with Cornell
*242nd meeting; Penn leads 162-79.
*The Big Red won the first meeting, 86-76, at The Palestra.
Ethan Roberts led the Quakers in that game with 26 points, while
Nick Spinoso finished with 12 points, six rebounds and seven assists.
*That win on January 18 was the Big Red's third in a row and fourth in the last five meetings. Prior to that, Penn had won five in a row and 16 of the last 17.
The Series with Columbia
*245th meeting; Penn leads 150-94.
*The Quakers won the first meeting this year, 93-78, at The Palestra on January 25.
Sam Brown led the Red and Blue, scoring a career-high 30 points and hitting eight 3FG on 10 attempts.
Roberts had a double-double, with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
*These teams split the season series a year ago, the home team winning each time as Columbia grabbed an 84-81 win here in NYC and the Quakers coming back with an 84-72 victory in Philly.
*Prior to that, Penn had won three in a row over Columbia; five of the last six; and eight of the last 10.
Penn MBB By The Numbers
2 - Players who had double-doubles last Friday vs. Dartmouth:
Ethan Roberts (15 points/11 rebounds) and
Sam Brown (15 points/10 assists); it marked the first time two Penn players had double-doubles in the same game since January 25, 2020 (AJ Brodeur and Ryan Betley).
2.75 - Brown's assist/turnover ratio in Ivy League play (33A/12TO); that leads the league among players averaging three or more assists per game.
3 - Penn is ending the season with three road games; after this weekend's Cornell/Columbia road trip, the Quakers are at Princeton next Saturday;
extending it by another two weeks, five of Penn's last seven Ivy League games were on the road this season.
3.0 - Three-point field goals made per game in Ivy League play by
Roberts, tied for tops in the league with Brown's Kino Lilly, Jr.
8 - Games missed by
Zanoni, before he returned to the rotation last Friday against the Big Green and had nine points (going 3-of-5 from beyond the arc);
the junior had scored 49 points in the three games before being befelled by various illnesses.
10 - Assists dished out by
Brown in the Dartmouth game last week, high for a Penn player this season and most since
Nick Spinoso had 11 against Saint Joseph's on November 20, 2022.
12 - Points scored by sophomore
Augustus Gerhart in last Saturday's overtime loss to Harvard, his season/career high.
12 - Penn players who have started at least one game this season; no one has started all 24 but
Spinoso and
Brown lead the way with 23 each.
Only one D1 school nationally has had more players start a game (San Diego, 15).
13 - Penn used its 13th different starting lineup in last Friday's Dartmouth game; only four D1 teams nationally have had more starting lineups so far this season (Wyoming and San Diego 15, Iona and Detroit Mercy 14).
14 - Three-point field goals attempted by Penn last Saturday against Harvard, fewest this season; the Quakers made just three, well off their Ivy average of 10.2 3FG per game entering the contest.
17 - Double-figure scoring streak currently held by
Roberts; he has averaged 18.6 ppg during the run, which includes eight 20-point games and started with a collegiate-high 33-point outing against Navy on November 29.
18.4 - Points-per-game average for Roberts in Ivy play, third in the league behind Dartmouth's Ryan Cornish (18.9) and Yale's John Poulakidas (18.5).
Brown is sixth, averaging 17.3 ppg.
47 - Points scored by
Spinoso last weekend, as he tied his career high with 23 against Dartmouth and then bettered it a night later with 24 vs. Harvard.
84 - Points scored by sophomore
Niklas Polonowski over the last 14 games, after he scored just seven across the Quakers' first ten contests;
he set a season/career high last Saturday with six rebounds against Harvard.
100 - Senior
George Smith played his 100th game for the Red and Blue last Friday; he became the second Penn player to reach the milestone this season, as
Spinoso got there on February 1 against Yale and enters the weekend with 105 appearances.
190 - Points scored by
Brown in 11 Ivy League games so far this season (17.3 points per game); that is far more than his point total (104) from the Quakers' 13 non-conference games (8.0 ppg).
Brown has scored in double figures in every Ivy game so far this season.
