PHILADELPHIA – The weekly awards have been handed out for men's basketball this week, and it was quite a day for University of Pennsylvania senior guard Ethan Roberts as he was named Player of the Week by both the Ivy League and the Philadelphia Big 5. In addition, CollegeInsider.com named Roberts as its Lou Henson National Mid-Major Player of the Week.
 
Roberts earned his awards with two outstanding performances last week, both of them in city series play. The senior guard scored 31 points (24 of them in the second half) and added five rebounds, two assists and three steals in Penn's 83-74 win over Saint Joseph's last Monday. Four days later, he led all players with 30 points and eight rebounds in the Quakers' 84-68 win at Drexel, adding another two assists and three steals. For the week, Roberts shot 19-33 (.576) from the field in the two games including 5-11 (.455) from three-point land, and 18-20 (.900) at the foul line.
 
In scoring 30 points in back-to-back games, Roberts became just the second Penn player to pull off the feat since Keven McDonald did so at the 1975 Sugar Bowl Classic with 35 points against Tennessee and 32 vs. Ohio State. The other player since then was Jordan Dingle, who dropped 31 against both Yale and Harvard during the 2021-22 season.
 
Roberts enters the Thanksgiving week third nationally in scoring, averaging 24.6 points per game. That puts him behind only Kansas State's PJ Haggerty (28.0 ppg) and Utah's Terrence Brown (25.2) and just ahead of another Ivy Leaguer, Cornell's Cooper Noard (24.4).
 
Penn (3-2) will host the Cathedral Classic this Friday through Sunday at The Palestra. The four-team field includes the Quakers, Merrimack, Hofstra, and fellow Big 5 member La Salle. The teams will play doubleheaders each day, with the twinbills starting at 2 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and at noon on Sunday.
