PHILADELPHIA– The University of Pennsylvania women's tennis team competed in the ITA Northeast Regional pre-qualifying singles draw on Thursday, Oct. 9.
Freshman standouts
Varsha Vedula and
Joleen Saw won both of their pre-qualifying matches, making themselves eligible for the main draw beginning tomorrow, Oct. 10.
Vedula defeated Victoria Madail Perez (Wagner) in her first match (6-3, 1-6, 7-6, 7-4).
She followed up this performance by beating Naomi Karki (Rutgers) in her second match (6-3, 6-3).
Saw secured victories against Alicia Gomez (Saint Johns) in her first match, (3-6, 6-3, 7-5) and Paula Guillen (LIU) in her second match (6-1, 6-3).
Liza Tkachenko,
Sasha Motlagh and
Sarah Wang lost their first round matchups.
Up Next
Doubles will begin tomorrow morning, followed by singles for the main draw.
Tkachenko/Motlagh, Urata/Saw, Vedula/Wang and Velaga/Stojanovski will be the Quakers pairs competing in doubles.
Esha Velaga,
Lara Stojanovski and
Maya Urata will join Vedula and Saw in main draw singles tomorrow.
