New Gift Will Name The Lacrosse Champions Fund

An Estate Gift, in the form of a bequest, from Barrett W. Freedlander, Esq., will provide funding for championship rings for the Penn Men's Lacrosse team—a symbol of hard work and success that student-athletes and coaches will carry with them throughout their lives

PHILADELPHIA – The Division of Recreation and Intercollegiate Athletics (DRIA) at the University of Pennsylvania announced a bequest from Barrett W. Freedlander, Esq., C'62, to establish the Lacrosse Champions Fund. Barrett's support will fund DRIA's commitment to the Penn Men's Lacrosse Team for winning an Ivy League championship by providing all team members and coaches with championship rings.

At Penn, the gifting of championship rings is a long-standing tradition, honoring student-athletes and coaches for winning Ivy League titles. Historically, the purchase of these rings has been supported through DRIA's operating funds and private donations solicited after each championship season. Penn Athletics views these rings as more than recognition of championship achievements; they serve as lasting symbols of pride and connection to the University of Pennsylvania for those who have earned the right to wear them. Through his generosity, Barrett seeks two outcomes: to provide permanent financial support for men's championship lacrosse teams and to inspire others to make similar gifts for all other varsity programs.

The University of Pennsylvania Men's Lacrosse Program has a proud tradition of excellence, defined by decades of competitive success, Ivy League championships and national recognition. Built on a foundation of hard work and high standards on the playing fields, the program has developed generations of standout student-athletes and leaders. Its enduring success reflects a strong culture, dedicated coaching and the unwavering support of alumni and the Penn community.

"We are incredibly grateful to Barrett for his generous gift in support of the Lacrosse Champions Fund. Making this bequest to Penn Men's Lacrosse demonstrates his love for the program and the impact that this program has had on his life after Penn. This gift will help provide championship rings for our student-athletes, a lasting symbol of their hard work and success that our student-athletes will carry with them throughout their lives. Barrett's continued support of Penn Lacrosse means a great deal to our program and helps us celebrate the achievements of our team in a meaningful way."— James H. Greene, Jr. Head Coach, Taylor Wray

"Supporting Penn Lacrosse has always been a source of great satisfaction for me. Establishing the Lacrosse Champions Fund is a way to honor the dedication, discipline, and success of our student athletes, and to celebrate the program's achievements in lasting ways. I hope my continued commitment inspires others in the Penn Lacrosse community to recognize the impact that Penn Lacrosse has had on their life's journey as well as join me in ensuring that this program continues to thrive for generations to come." — Barrett W. Freedlander, Esq., C'62

Barrett has been steadfast in his support of strategic priorities for Penn Athletics and the Lacrosse program. Barrett has held various volunteer leadership positions at Penn and is a longstanding member of the Penn Lacrosse Board, currently as an Emeritus member. He is a former lacrosse player and earned his bachelor's degree from the College of Arts and Sciences in 1962.
