Field Hockey Drops Non-Conference Game vs. American, 1-0

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania field hockey team fell to American, 1-0, in a Sunday matinee at Ellen Vagelos Field.

The Quakers (1-7) were led by freshmen Darcey Chapman and Riley Thomson with two shots on goal while Elle Ridge scored the lone goal for the Eagles (5-5).

Quaker Notemeal
*Meghan McGinley recorded her second defensive save of the season. She is one of three players in the Ivy League with multiple defensive saves.

*The Quakers did not concede a single penalty corner. It's the first time they have done so since their 6-0 victory over LIU Brooklyn on Sept. 9, 2016.

*Penn outshot American, 11-9. It's the third game in a row the Quakers have finished with more shots than their opponent.

How It Happened
The Quakers controlled the first half despite the score being knotted up after 30 minutes. They recorded 10 shots—five on-target—compared to two for the Eagles. Penn also had six penalty corners.

American flipped the script in the third quarter, doubling its shot total from the first half. With two minutes left in the quarter, the Eagles found the back of the net. Federica Turina Dellamaggiore put a shot up which Ruby de Frees saved but Ridge scored off the rebound.

The Eagles maintained their offensive pressure from the third quarter but the Quakers held firm. One sequence saw de Frees make an incredible save and McGinley prevented another shot from going in. Despite the defensive effort from Penn, it couldn't find the equalizer, falling 1-0.
Up Next
The Quakers will stay in Philadelphia and continue Ancient Eight play by hosting Columbia on Friday at 2 p.m. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+.
