EUGENE, Ore. – Junior
James Rhoads and senior
Scott Toney earned their second All-America honors this year, as both earned top-16 finishes in the men's pole vault to complete the first day of competition at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Hayward Field.
Rhoads was one of just seven vaulters to clear 5.52 meters (18 feet 1.25 inches) and took sixth place overall, earning first-team All-America honors. Toney maxed out at 5.37 meters (17 feet 7.25 inches) and was 13th in the field, earning him a second-team award. Both of them were first-team All-Americans at the Indoor Championships in March.
Penn's only other men's competitor, freshman
Ryan Matulonis, ran the 400 hurdles and finished fourth in the first of three heats Wednesday night at 50.12 seconds. That ultimately was not enough to qualify him for Friday's final as he was the first runner out, in tenth place. That was enough, however, to earn him second-team All-America recognition.
