Softball Sweeps Brown, 6-3 (8) and 3-1, To End 2024 Season

Providence, R.I. - The University of Pennsylvania softball team ended the 2024 season on a high note, sweeping Brown in its twin bill Saturday afternoon.  
 
The Quakers mounted a late game comeback in the opener to eventually win 6-3 in extras, and took a lead in the third inning of game two, and did not surrender, to earn the 3-1 victory.

The Bears scored in the bottom of the third when Jasmine Hsiao collected an RBI triple, and added another run in the bottom of the fifth when Jayme Gross reached on an error and eventually made her way to third base, Brianna Rodriguez then singled up the middle to extend the lead, 2-0 in favor of Brown.  
 
Julia Mortimer led off the top of the sixth with a double to left center and moved to third when Megan Huang grounded out to third. Brianna Brown got the Quakers on the board with a single to left. Sammy Fenton kept the inning going with a single to third base, as both Brown and Fenton stole bases to put both runners into scoring position. Dani Freer hit a shallow fly ball to left and Brown scored on an error in left, tying the game, 2-2. Dakota Farmer dropped in a single to left, scoring Fenton and giving the Red and Blue the 3-2 lead. 
 
With their last chances at the plate, Vanessa Alexander snuck a single down the left field line to lead off the bottom of the seventh for the Bears. A sac bunt moved Alexander into scoring position, who then scored when Rodriguez doubled to left, tying the game, 3-3, sending the game into extra innings. 
 
Heading into the top of the eighth, Huang led off the frame with a single to left center, which was followed by Brown who reached with a base knock up the middle. Fenton laid down a sacrifice bunt to move both runners into scoring position, and Freer drew a walk to load the bases. Farmer came up clutch once again, this time delivering the go-ahead single to left to plate two, as Penn led, 5-3. Katie Reagan added to the Quakers' lead with a sacrifice fly to right, bringing in Freer.  
 
Payton Bean got the final three outs in the bottom of the eighth, as the red and Blue held on for the 6-3 win.  
 
FINAL: Penn 3, Brown 1 
Penn got on the board first in game two, putting up a run in the top of the third. Huang beat out a slow roller in front of the plate, and then advanced to second on an error by Brown's catcher.Brown executed a sacrifice bunt, moving the speedy freshman into prime scoring position. Fenton produced an RBI knock to left center, as the Quakers took a 1-0 advantage.  
 
In the top of the fourth, Farmer singled to left and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Reagan. Chloe Lesko sent a deep drive into the left center gap, picking up an RBI double.  
 
Brown began the top of the fifth with a double to left center and advanced to third on a passed ball. Fenton brought in Penn's third run of the game with a sacrifice fly to right field
 
With the bases loaded for the Bears and only one out in the bottom of the sixth, starting pitcher Olivia Szewczyk exited the game, as Kelly Zybura entered in relief. Although Brown scratched across a run, the Quakers held on to a 3-1 lead entering the seventh.  
 
Zybura delivered a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the seventh, as Penn completed the sweep, rounding out the day with a 3-1 victory, and closing out the 2024 season with a pair of wins. 
 
Quaker Notemeal 
  • The Quakers combined for eight hits in game one, as Farmer and Brown collected a pair. Fenton, Mortimer, Huang and Delaney Smith added one apiece.  
  • Brown scored two of Penn's six runs, with Fenton, Freer, Mortimer and Huang crossing the plate once.  
  • Farmer totaled a career-high three RBI, while Reagan and Brown contributed with one.  
  • Starting pitcher Rachel Riley went 5.1 innings surrendering just three hits and two earned runs. Bean picked up her fourth win of the season, going the final 2.2, giving up three hits and one earned run.  
  • Penn also had eight hits in game two, as Fenton and Farmer added two apiece. Brown, Lesko, Huang and Jillian Kuntze added a knock each.  
  • Brown, Farmer and Huang all scored in game two.  
  • Fenton had a pair of RBI in game two, while Lesko added the third of the game.  
  • Szewczyk earned the victory in the circle, tossing 5.1 innings giving up just two hits and one earned run. Zybura got the final five outs and did not allow a hit.
