MLAX Prepares for Ivy League Tournament in Ithaca This Weekend

PHILADELPHIA – The nationally ranked University of Pennsylvania men's lacrosse team hits the road for the 2024 Ivy League Tournament this weekend, taking on #1 seed Cornell in the semifinals on Friday, May 3.

Last Time Out
*#16 Penn closed out the regular season back on April 20, falling 15-10 to nationally recognized Princeton in Old Nassau.
 
*Underclassmen paced the Red and Blue in the road battle, as freshman Davis Provost and sophomore Griffin Scane both recorded their first collegiate hat tricks.
 
*Three other Quakers hit the back of Princeton's net, with James Shipley netting a pair and juniors Luke DiNola and Tynan Walsh scoring once. Walsh led the offense with four points, lending a helping hand on three goals to record his fourth four-point outing of the year.
 
*FOGO Ethan Costanzo took every faceoff against the Tigers, winning 12 while scooping up a team-high seven ground balls.
 
*Senior goalkeeper Emmet Carroll tallied his fourth 17-save performance of the season to keep the Quakers in the contest for the entire 60 minutes.
 
*Defensemen Brendan LavelleRyan McLaughlin, and Ethan Till each caused a pair of turnovers to lead the defense.
 
All-Ivy Honors
*The Ivy League announced the 2024 All-Ivy honoree this past Wednesday, with six Quakers landing postseason nods.
 
*Carroll, Brendan Lavelle, and Cam Rubin led the charge, landing First Team All-Ivy. 
 
*Peter Blake, Shipley, and Till were named Second Team All-Ivy to even out the league honors.
 
*Rubin and Till garnered the Ivy recognition for the first time in their collegiate careers.
 
Leading the Ivies
*Keeper Carroll currently leads all Ivy League goalkeepers in saves per game, totaling 210 saves on the season and averaging 15 per game. The Rye, N.Y. native is also third among goalkeepers in save percentage (.581) and fourth in goals-against-average (10.52).
 
*Junior Walsh sits in the top ten of multiple offensive stats, holding fifth in assists per game (1.54) and eighth in points per game (3.46).
 
*FOGO Ethan Costanzo has been quick off the faceoff this season, scooping up 3.5 ground balls a contest to land seventh amongst the Ivies.

*Defender Lavelle cracked the top ten in caused turnovers per game, forcing opponents to cause 1.29 per contest.

*After a dominant performance in the X this year, sophomore Mac Eldridge is currently ninth among faceoff specialists in the conference with a .471 faceoff percentage.

The Series with Cornell
*The Big Red owns the all-time advantage in the series, leading 47-20, but this Quakers hold the latest win from this season.
 
*The Red and Blue are looking for their first win in Ithaca since the 2019 season when Penn won 16-15.
 
*The last time these teams met in the postseason during the 2014 campaign, the Quakers took an 11-10 victory in Cambridge.
 
Last Time We Met
*These Ivy foes met in University City back in March, with The Quakers taking the 11-10 battle in double overtime.
 
*Senior Rubin scored a sock trick in the win, including the game-winner to lead the offense.
 
*Goalkeeper Carroll kept the Quakers alive the entire game, tallying 17 saves. Carroll did it all defensively, recording a pair of turnovers and ground balls to go with his double-figure tally.
  
 *All-Ivy First Teamer Lavelle showed why he earned the honor, leading the defense in turnovers (4) and ground balls (3). 
  
 *Five Quakers, including Rubin, hit the back of the Big Red's net, with sophomore Scane netting a pair to account for the other multi-goal scoring in the contest. Chris Canet, senior Shipley, and Ben Smith each scored to even out the goals against Cornell.
 
Scouting the Big Red
*Cornell landed seven All-Ivy honors, including Ivy League Rookie of the Year in Willem Firth. CJ Kirst, Hugh Kelleher, and Jayson Singer were named First Team All-Ivy, while Michael Long and Brendan Staub earned Second Team All-Ivy. Firth, Marc Psyllos, and Spencer Wirtheim grabbed Honorable Mention All-Ivy to round out the Big Red presence on the All-Ivy teams.
 
*Cornell is bringing back-to-back Ivy League wins into Friday's contest. The Big Red's most recently edged Dartmouth out 15-10 to close out the regular season.
  
* Kirst leads the Big Red in points (66), goals (45), and caused turnovers (16). Long has tallied a team-high 34 assists.
  
*On the other end of the field, Wyatt Knust and Matthew Tully have spent time in the cage. Knust has saved 130 of 328 shots faced so far this season, while Tully has stopped 57 of 211 attempts on him.
