Neskie Powers Baseball Past Delaware State, 13-1, With Two Homers

DOVER, Del. – Ending the non-conference portion of the schedule on a high note, the University of Pennsylvania baseball team used two home runs off the bat of senior Justin Neskie to rout Delaware State, 13-1, Tuesday afternoon at Bob Reed Field.

The Quakers (18-21) finish out the road slate with a 10-16 overall record, while the Hornets fall to 14-22 overall, extending their losing streak to five consecutive games.

Quaker Notemeal
*Penn improves to 4-0 all-time against Delaware State and 3-0 in Dover.

*Justin Neskie only hits home runs. Literally. The senior catcher has three hits—both this season and in his career—and all three are homers after launching a pair Tuesday afternoon. This year, Neskie is batting .429 (3-for-7) with three home runs, six RBIs, two walks and a massive slugging percentage of 1.714. Quite the story!

*Will Tobin, Andrew Miehe, Marty Coyne, Edward Sarti, Anthoni Kiafoulis, and Marshall Mott combined to pitch a one-hitter, the fewest hits given up in a game by Quaker pitching in 2024 and the least amount in a single game since tossing a one-hitter on April 26, 2015 vs. Columbia.

*Tobin (1-2) earned the win after pitching three perfect innings in his second start of the year. He struck out four without allowing a run, hit, or walk.

*Five Quakers, including Neskie, had multi-hit games in Wyatt Henseler (2-for-5), Davis Baker (2-for-4), Ryan Taylor (2-for-4), and Carson Ozmer (2-for-5).

*Henseler hit his 49th career double to lead off the eighth inning. That ties him with both Tom Grandieri '10 and William Gordon '10 for the program's all-time lead.

*Eight players walked 10 times on Tuesday, including two each for Taylor and Calvin Brown. That number is tied for the second-most in a game this season. Penn drew 10 walks at Harvard on Saturday and at Villanova (3/13).

How It Happened
The first two Quakers to open the first inning recorded outs, but Davis Baker singled to right field, kickstarting a string of walks to both Ryan Taylor and Carson Ozmer, loading the bases for Nick Spaventa, who flew out to right to end the threat.

Will Tobin cruised through the DSU order in his three perfect innings of work, striking out four without allowing a run, hit, or walk.

Penn scored its first two runs of the game in the second inning on Justin Neskie's two-run shot to left field, surging ahead 2-0.

The Quakers allowed their first hit of the game in the fourth inning against Andrew Miehe, but he worked out of it by getting the next batter to fly out to center.

Fast-forwarding ahead to the fifth inning, Penn began the frame with back-to-back walks to Wyatt Henseler and Davis Baker, as Ozmer singled to left field to load the bases with one away. Spaventa walked in a run, followed by a sacrifice fly to left field for Gavin Collins and an RBI single to left field by Calvin Brown upped the Penn lead to 5-0. Neskie belted his second long ball of the afternoon—a three-run shot to left field—to put the game out of reach at 8-0 to cap a six-run stanza.

Marty Coyne pitched a strong fifth and sixth, retiring the side both times despite allowing a baserunner on via a fielder's choice in the fifth to keep the Hornets out of the run column yet again.

Brown tacked on a run for the Quakers in the seventh inning on his sac-fly, making it a 9-0 game, while Edward Sarti struck out two in the bottom of the seventh, sending the contest to the eighth with a nine-run cushion.

After Henseler led off the eighth with a double, Baker drove him in with a single to center field, pushing the Penn lead to double-digits at 10-0.

Anthoni Kiafoulis came in to pitch the eighth inning, surrendering four consecutive free passes—with three walks—to give DSU its first run of the day, 10-1.

Penn added three more runs on three hits—including RBI doubles for Chavez and Taylor—to take a commanding 13-1 lead into the final inning.

Marshall Mott shut the door in the bottom half of the frame, retiring the first two batters and striking out the final hitter looking to seal the win.
