PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania baseball team didn't start the final series of the regular season off the way they wanted to, falling to Dartmouth, 12-3, Friday afternoon at Tommy Lasorda Field at Meiklejohn Stadium.

The Big Green (12-24, 7-12 Ivy) used two five-run innings to come away with the nine-run victory over the Quakers (18-22, 9-10 Ivy) with just two games remaining.

*Two players had multi-hit games in
Ryan Taylor (2-for-5) and
Carson Ozmer (2-for-4).
*Penn scored all three of its runs on homers with one for
Davis Baker and the other for
Nick Spaventa.

Wyatt Henseler (1-for-5) extended his reached-base streak to 25 consecutive games.
*
Cole Zaffiro (4-4) was charged with the loss after allowing seven runs on nine hits over five innings, striking out six and walking two.
Marty Coyne held the Big Green without a hit over the final 3.1 frames of the afternoon, striking out a pair with two walks.
How It Happened
Penn and Dartmouth traded 1-2-3 first innings as
Cole Zaffiro retired the Big Green side in order with two strikeouts.

Zaffiro struck out the first batter he faced to begin the second, but then gave up a solo home run to give Dartmouth a 1-0 lead.

Ryan Taylor led off the home half of the second inning with a double ripped down the right-field line and
Nick Spaventa cashed in two runs on a mammoth homer over the center-field fence, putting the Quakers up 2-1.

The Big Green tallied back-to-back base hits to begin the third inning, bringing in one run on a one-out single and the other on a bases-loaded walk to re-take the lead at 3-2. Three more runs came across to score on two singles to cap a five-run frame.

Taylor began the third with his second double of the game, but quickly went back to the dugout after Spaventa was retired on strikes.

Zaffiro put together a 1-2-3 inning to get the Big Green out in the fourth, while the Quakers put together a charge the next half with back-to-back hits to lead off, followed by two walks to load the bases. Henseler was called out on strikes to leave three runners on heading to the fifth.

Dartmouth tacked on a seventh run in the fifth with an RBI single with two outs, taking a 7-2 lead.

Davis Baker led off the bottom of the fifth with a solo homer to right field, trimming the Big Green's lead to 7-3.

Facing off against
John Cerwinski in the sixth inning, Dartmouth scored five runs on three hits to take a 12-3 lead.

Marty Coyne held the Big Green without a base hit over 3.1 shutout innings of relief, but the Quakers left six runners on base over the last four innings to allow Dartmouth to prevail with the runaway victory.

Penn closes the 2024 regular season slate Saturday with a doubleheader against Dartmouth beginning at 11:30 a.m. Prior to the start of Game 1, the Quakers will honor nine members of the senior class with a special pre-game ceremony.
